So a few years ago I picked up a Squier Musicmaster bass off Craigslist for only $100, a deal I couldn't pass up.

The pickguard was busted and the body was a little rough with some nicks and stuff but still a good deal and I thought it would be great with my Fender Musicmaster.

So the first thing I did was replace the pickguard with a black/gray pearl one.

And that was good for awhile but than my kids thought it would be cool to have a bass with the Grumpy theme, good joke around our house, I can be that way in the am from time to time, usually before 8am and some coffee. Anyway, I bought a new plain white guard and my son took to it with his airbrush.

And I've used it that way for about 3 years now, loved it. But it finally got to the point where I was tired of the black finish. I sent it in to "guitarpaintguys" and got it refinished in Kandy Apple Red and just got it back last week. Now after reassembly I'm loving the way it looks. I asked my son to redo the Grumpy in a theme with some color but he couldn't decide on something we liked so I went back to the pearl one and think it looks great.

Hope you like the photos. Can't wait to gig with this one.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Cool photos Chris. Super cool Grumpy guitar, elegant transformation. And who is the handsome chap in the last photo ? Lovely collection.

Thanks guys, it was time for this change.

Grumpy may not be gone forever, if my son can come up with a way to paint it in colors that would good on the red he'll be back.

In the meantime, my family and bandmates still have me so that's a pretty good amount of Grumpy. :D

That's a cool bass! I like the finish you had done on it. 8)

Thanks guys!

Had no idea Grumpy would be so missed.

I actually had one guy (insert $@!&#*%) tell me it was childish and stupid on a bass. Not that I changed it over that because that was years ago, just saying. He's part of the "old school" music community in this area.

But I love my Musicmasters and I love this Kandy Apple finish. Glad you guys like it too.

Unless someone specifically asks for my opinion about their modifications, I probably wouldn't express it...and even then, I would probably (at most) say what I would do differently.

I have modified/customized several of my instruments--and I know some of those modifications wouldn't work for anybody but me. I appreciate it if someone thinks it's cool, but if they don't, that's ok, too...

But I don't care to hear someone's negative opinion of my guitar. That's like somebody saying they find your spouse unattractive.

EXACTLY! The very worst thing I would say is not offer an opinion. Guitars are as individual as the person, from the setup to the components to the finish. But that's the "old school" group around this town, like 10 or 15 guys all in their late 50's that everyone knows. Between them there's been about 10 band formation over the years, they sponsor 2 different "open mics" that are not open at all. It's a group I won't be part of but that's okay too.

Good to know someone feels the same way I do, wasn't there a rule we were taught at like 4 years old...."if you can't say anything nice than don't say anything at all?"

Let's hope he never saw guitars like Yngwie Malmsteen's "Anka" or Clapton's "The Fool".
Bass guitar? I guess he thinks Flea and Adam Clayton are childish and stupid...

I see nothing wrong with personalizing a guitar, and especially not when done in a reversible manner, and tastefully done like this.
