So, Since i'm probably the only Brazilian dude here, i wanted to share with you guys some of my country's rock music, which surprisingly isn't only samba and forró :P
First, a 80's band called "Camisa de Venus"

coming next, "Ultraje a Rigor"

On the Heavier side, "Raimundos"

This guys were the best, sadly they only made 1 album and had only a 6 month career put to an tragic end by a plane crash which took all of the band.
i present you "Mamonas Assassinas"

[/spoiler]
and this guys are the most known/most played here, "Legião Urbana" i don't like them much, but their lyrics are deep and powerful, i'd recommend looking for translations, because they're really good. :)

that doesn't cover all of the bands, but i'd say these are the most known bands :D

ps: i any mod want i'll post only the link to mamonas' album since there are boobs and such.

Thanks for posting. Each of those albums sound good. The musicianship is very good as well as the production quality. All of those bands have unique styles and I can tell why they are popular.
This is my favorite band from south of the border. Mexico is a little bit north of Brazil.

An erroneous assumption, sir.

Forum member "de Melo" also hails from Brazil.

I have never even heard of "forró"...

If I were to sum up what I knew of Brazilian music before now, the list would probably be:
- Sepultura
- Samba
- Bossa Nova
- Sepultura
- Vuvuzela[*]
- Home of the best rosewood/palisander tonewood
- Sepultura

[*]: At birth, when the gender is determined, the Brazilian midwife or doctor will hand the newborn males a vuvuzela. The father is admonished to teach his son well, and that not playing the vuvuzela within 20 km of any football match is a crime against Brazilianity. There are special earplugs made of wax from plants in deepest rainforest that allow Brazilians, unlike the rest of the world, to survive with their ear drums intact. (That also explains Sepultura).

;)

nice! forró is a country-ish style of music, the name came from a tourist who saw everybody dancing, regardless of gender, race, social class and said that the song was "for-all" and over time ended up called forró :)
you know quite a lot about brazilian music, probably more than i do

and i can confirm that we manufacture the wax, sadly it can be only sold for brazilian born people :(

Thanks for remembering me here, Roger!

E aí Tigre, beleza, cara?

Tiger, very good initiative.

Anyway, I must say I don't like about 80% of the so called "rock n roll" produced in Brazil. Sad but true.

I simply can't dig it, because most of the studio stuff is based on the lyrics rather than the instrumentals... Very little attention is given to tone itself, plus there is way too much acoustic $@!& thrown in and many bands (like Raimundos or Ultraje a Rigor) are too clowny to be taken seriously by me, pure crap IMHO (detesto banda que se dedica demais a tiração de onda). I hate this.

One of the old school rock musicians I respect, Lobão, said a lot about all this in one of his books called "Manifest of the 'nothing' in neverland".

Please don't be mad at me, because I am simply saying what I think, but that's how things work here... Even some of the major record companies impose lots of restraints to what the musicians do for the sake of "publishing something the people won't find too heavy". Ugh.

Anyway, Brazil does however have some good rock, folk and blues musicians, I'll make a small collection of vids for you all.

Welcome aboard, Tiger, and post away!

Ok let's begin with some Blues.

This is probably the best Brazilian Blues player I know of, Celso Blues Boy (definitely worth watching, the man was GOOD):

(BTW he is playing a Southern Cross Series Strat, one of the early 90s Fenders that were made under license in Brazil, I own one of those in CAR too)

These are the Titãs, one of the REAL rock n roll bands we have here. Their influences are mainly new wave, punk rock and grunge. It's the only Brazilian band I've taken the time to go see play live.
This is a recent concert:

I'll post more later!

Great thread, Eduardo. What SBLS said about the music and production +1. Thanks, for posting.

After checking on forró I found these two examples to show similarity in music which might help to give an idea as to what it is. The popularity has, as many here may know, spread to other countries and it is easy to see that tourists played a part.

Brazil:

Germany:

Hey! I just heard that accordion forró on the TV from the Olympic Closing Ceremony. Now that I looked it up, I can recognize it right away.

Kinky. Rockin' band with great tones, Rollie.

FSB
I might consider doing some Brazilian rock, but I can't roll my tongue or words.

So, another great Brazilian rock n' roll songwriter was Raul Seixas.

He was from Bahia, born in 1945, and died in 1989. An often misunderstood poet, he was deeply influenced by occultism and the works of Aleister Crowley. He even claimed to have plans for the creation of the "Alternative Society," which was to be an anarchist community, mentioned in his lyrics.

Although he had some VERY cool blues-based rock compositions, people in Brazil usually like and remember him for his more philosophic and quiet music.

Here's one of my favorite songs by him. The licks always reminded me of Brown Sugar by the Stones:

Great bit of history in Brazilian Rock and Roll. Thanks.

Seixas sounds like a candidate for a Brazilian Music Hall Of Fame. Is there such a place?
