It's New Guitar Day here at Casa de Armadillo...after waiting over a year, I finally pulled the trigger on a used Fender Modern Player Telecaster Thinline Deluxe.

I had originally wanted one with the Transparent Black finish, but I had not been able to find a one, new or used, except online...with these being MIC, I had concerns about QC. I had played several dozen of this model and found no duds in the series, but still had my concerns.

I wanted a black one because of the ridiculous Blinding White pickguard on the Sunburst, and the fact that sunbursts aren't my favorite ever...I don't dislike them, they're just not my first choice.

I finally resigned myself to a sunburst, since I couldn't find the finish I wanted. The one I bought had been sitting for a few months at the venerable Competition Music in the beautiful East Side/Polytechnic area of Fort Worth, Texas (Note use of sarcasm font for description of this neighborhood--it's a good place to go to get killed!).

I've been trading with Scott (owner, proprietor and founder of Competition Music and the Fort Worth Guitar Show) since he opened shop over 20 years ago. He's always given me good deals and helps me source oddball items from time to time.

I made a good trade-in--a cheap Epiphone Special 90 (that had good pickups and nothing else going for it--it would cost more to make it usable than I paid for it, and the neck would still be too small) and a Greta amp that never turned my key completely.

It started out life like this:

I disliked the pickguard, the pickup covers and the knobs. It made the guitar look and feel kinda cheap (IMHO)--and not in a good, funky way. Therefore, I decided to make a few cosmetic changes, and ended up looking like this:

New tortoiseshell pickguard, chrome pickup covers and dome chrome Telecaster knobs.

After a setup, intonation and string change, she looks, feels and sounds great--and I'm as happy as a pig in mud!

Way cool new axe, it looks specacular after the upgrades.

And I'm totally with you on the sunburst, not my favorite either but when a guitar speaks to you in some way you just overlook such things.

Enjoy the new guitar!

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

nothing but nice-congrats!

I remember when I was learning guitar in the 60's, the tele was thought of as a country guitar. rockers tended towards strats. over the years I have found how wrong that was, and a tele is definitely on my list.

rock on my friend-nice axe.

P-90's...MMMM...really like the look with the knobs and matching covers, but just not a fan of the tortoise on sunburst, should have kept the white pick guard for contrast. Of course, JMHO, and glad you are happy with it! Congrats.

I'm not typically a big fan of tortoiseshell pickguards on electrics, but what an improvement over the white your guitar came with. Paired with the chrome that's a real beauty!

If the pickguard had been a black, aged/creamy/minty white, or even white mother-of-pearl, I might not have changed it, but I just couldn't stand the Screaming Blinding White of the original.

...and I always liked the contrast of tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl guards, especially some on some the classic designs of the 60s and 70s...but different strokes for different folks and so on and so on and scooby dooby doo...
