As for my five personal favorites? Off the top of my head...
Buck Dharma
Pat Travers
Alex Lifeson
Steve Howe
the classic Thin Lizzy duo (Scott Gorham/Brian Robertson)

Buck "Dharma" Roeser is seriously underrated. Him and Joe Bouchard (bass) playing off each other was what made old Blue Oyster Cult so great. (Joe Bouchard is also underrated, IMO - he's one of the guys who can play pretty much any instrument.)

Steve Howe is a legend. Not only Yes and Asia, but Howe and Genesis' Steve Hackett's "GTR" album probably has some of the best guitar on it of any prog album. Not being mainstream and pop enough, it was a vastly underrated album. People expected a mix of Genesis and Yes with synth and songs, and that's so not what they got. The name "GTR" should have clued them in...

It's all very subjective.

Absolutely, Paris. Subjective when it comes to best, and even more when it comes to fave. :D

It's difficult some times. I'm a dyed in the wool Andy Summers fan, but I don't like all of his style.

I learned to the play the blues because of Clapton, but I haven't really liked anything he's done since Frim the Craddle.

Micheal Casswell and Jeff Beck are amazing because they shape sound and will it to their will.

Lots of notes or complicated runs are not what motivates me. Invoking something from within me, is what moves me. Muddy Waters Honey Bee, Can't Be Satisfied, and Long Distance Call move me.

I hear ya, Paris. I'm with you when it comes to appreciating or enjoying a guitarist or any other musician for that matter. While it is true that speed, accuracy, technique, performance and a slew of other intricacies are admirable, many of these things can be copied or bettered. On that basis I'll throw the attention to the charisma of the individual and the overall presentation. I saw Buddy Rich live (twice)(one of his favourite drummers was Neil Peart). Totally different genres, but equally technically proficient. As for Buddy there is little question as to his popularity and skill factor; but, there was always a love/hate relationship whether it was his music or perfection personality. He was often compared to Krupa who, incidentally, excelled on the brush work. Both shared fans and then again both had different fans. Both were, as in the guitar world, known as the musicians' musician even amongst Rockers. Yet, every song was not great.

For me, I like to think it begins with a great song, followed up by someone who can add to that with a personal contribution that hits the soul of the recipient(s).

There are times when being a one hit wonder is not so bad. Others would disagree. Some would accept a string of mediocrity, hills and valleys, and still others are lucky to have hit after hit. I'm pretty sure the song writer and/or producer has historically been shown to be a key factor. Further proof is that great songs can be covered by many, but many do not have great songs. When the talented do - watch out! Skill and mojo, however, are different considerations with merit to be sure. Repetition that is accepted by the fans is a plus when it comes to becoming a favourite IMHO.

I'm not as good as I once was; but, I'm as good once as I'll ever be. . . . Because, I'll never be a favourite with the masses unless I pay them, one really great memorable hit song would do me fine.
Cheers!

Paul Pesco (formerly) and Shane Theriot (currently) from 'Live From Daryl's House' are both quite good.

I agree. I haven't watched that show in awhile, but they are pretty good. You know, It's actually kind of hard just to pick 5. Of course, there's also those that are no longer with us, too.

Jeeeese, not all of them have to be from the stone age

John Dwyer, his riffage and technique is by far one of the most interesting i've heard.
Stu mackenzie/all the other guitarist's from King gizzard and the lizard and wizard, their playing blends together so well and especially listening to their latest few albums, it's very technical.
Jack White, I'm pretty sure I don't have to explain my reasoning behind this choice.
Charles Mootheart, his work and riffage in Fuzz is like the reincarnation of Tommy Iommi and Cream era Clapton
Husky Gawenda, his finger picking and carefully articulated parts give him the spot

Anyone gonna beat me up cause they're not from pre-90's?

Good choices! The only thing asked was "favorite living guitarists" - hope you don't
want to start trouble on other's choices - different strokes...

Thanks for the heads up Riley. Jack White I know and like, I'll give a listen to those other guitarists on your list. 8)
