After some conversing with ZZDoc, I figured I'd get some input from
the rest of the forum on this topic.

You can choose acoustic players as well. Tommy Emmanuel came close in my picks.

I voted Gilmour, Knopfler and Blackmore
I also add Doyle Bramhall II and Warren Haynes, not for their chops but for their tasteful use of actual music rather than wanking which I find to be far more important than tech skills and speed.
Not that they're severely wanting ....

This topic has come up at least a dozen times since I joined here so I will refrain from posting my list of 2 or 3 dozen nominees for honourable mention.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Besides Setzer and Beck:

- Earl Klugh -- since acoustic is allowed -- long time master of "modern" acoustic styling
- John Pizzarelli -- proves Jazz and "the standards" don't have to be boring
- Kenny Burrell -- one of the last bridges between where guitar was (rhythm instrument) and where it is now (solo, etc.)

Wow, Randy Hansen gets mentioned before even a whisper of Eddie Van Halen or Jimmy Page?? My, how things have changed...
(And back to Randy Hansen ... Seriously?? He is one of the few guitar players where I walked out on his show. I have seen him numerous times. and find him very forgetful. Just a humble opinion, though...)
