There is lots about amp dating and I am hoping that it is similar for Cabinets.

There is a serial number on a very small silver plate on the bottom of the cabinet. Reading:

"P38085"

According to Fender's amp dating, "P" should be 1966? I am just wondering if I am on the right track. (Ignore my Silvertone 1484 on top.) 8)

The serial number stamped on the ID tag cannot be extrapolated into an accurate date. However, inside the cabinet you may find a date code ink-stamped on one of the rear cleats OR on the rear edge of the center partition. Absent that, it falls to the style of the grill-weave to arrive at a close approximation. The drip-edge cosmetics were used only from mid/late 1967 until very early 1969. However, the grill cloth changed beginning with the 1969 model year. Where it was initially silver/black/pale blue it would later become silver/white/metallic turquoise. These big-box cabs were furnished for both the Bandmaster and Bassman amps and the only way to differentiate between the two is by the spacing of the anchor bushings on the top of the enclosure. The Bandmaster will measure 25½" center to center while the Bassman is 23¼" center to center. In early '68, after a rash of speaker failures, the Bassman was upgraded from 12-inch to 15-inch drivers.

Thank you Arjay!! I am going to have to tear into it again tomorrow and I will look for stamped dates on the inside. There is a bit of rattling going on with one of the speakers I have to fix. :)

The speakers (if original) are likely to be Oxford 12L8's. They're nothing to write home about......
