Yeah, that Tacoma website has been "waiting for the wood to season" for a few years now.

Tacoma is a brand I wish could be resurrected. In the US, that is.

From the press when Fender bought Tacoma:

"The deal includes the brand names Tacoma, Olympia, Orpheum and Papoose, all of which likely will be kept in use, Fender spokesman Morgan Ringwald said."

Yeah. Right.

"It also includes the company's factory in Tacoma, which may be expanded in the future. "

Yeah. Right.

"Of Tacoma Guitar's roughly 50 employees, "the major, major bulk will stay," with "maybe one to five" laid off because of redundancy, he said."

Yeah. Right.

Tacoma's VP of Sales and Marketing said:
"We'll probably double our production. It will be great for the production staff and great for customers."

Yeah. Right.

They had an acoustic bass guitar that surpassed pretty much everything else available at the time. At least that's what all the reviews said, anyway. I never got a chance to try one. They still command a good dollar on the used market.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I’m not sure what brands and companies Fender owns or controls anymore. For that matter, I’m not sure who owns FMIC. Looks like private equity companies and music distributors have held a controlling interest in FMIC since about 2012. That’s when the sell offs started. Ovation guitars, Gretsch drums and the percussion business got sold in 2012. That’s the same year Hamer got shut down. I was excited when I saw Guild was building electrics again. I didn’t realize they got sold off last year. The Takamine distribution deal ended in 2014. Tacoma ceased production back in 2008 to move the business to the Ovation plant in Connecticut, but production never started up again. Sunn amplifiers never saw the light of day (sorry!) after Fender bought the brand.

What does that leave? Squier, of course, and Charvel/Jackson. Gretsch guitars is once again owned by the Gretsch family, though, Fender still produces and markets the guitars. I didn’t include EVH. Did I miss anything else?

Yeah, Sunn got canned in 2002, after Fender rebadged those Sunn amps that were last out with Fender logos. There was that 1200 watt solid state and 300 watt all tube amps. I remember some amp called Brand X, or something like that. Who knows what happened to that? That was around the time of the Hello Kitty Squiers.

Wasn't Charvel somehow associated with Jackson back in the 80's?

Wayne Carvel was building guitars in the mid- to late-1970's, and then sold Charvel Guitars to Grover Jackson.

Grover continued to build guitars with the Charvel name on them, and only put his name ("Jackson") on the first Randy Rhodes model, because he was afraid the design would be a bust and he didn't want to harm the Charvel brand name equity...since the design wasn't a bust, he decided to use Jackson on some designs and Charvel on others.

I still don't understand why and how the brand(s) fell apart when they did, other than hair metal dying, and their name/use being heavily identified with that genre.
