I've been thinking of getting an axe fx for a couple of years. But it took me a while to get my head around the concept, plus the cost of entry is pretty high. Today I decided to go with a Helix unit, rather than to keep buying more and more tube amps. There's so many options of how to use it, that it was a no brainer. The one I saw demo'd was pretty incredible in both sound, flexibility, and ease of use. It's coming from Florida, so I won't get it for at least a week or more.
Anyone else take the plunge into what I consider pro modeling?
I'll be using mine both with my tube amps and with a SS amp into an FRFR speaker, or straight into a PA, or DAW, or .............
Seriously, this unit has a lot of potential.

The beauty of these units is when they are played through a SS amp and FRFR speaker system. But I wanted to be able to use it with my tube amps also. This video is what pushed me over the edge to buy it. They spend 26 minutes putting the Helix into a Victory V30 Countess, which is the amp I currently use in my band.

the guitarist in my sons band uses one of these. he runs a PRS Vetta with a Crate Vintage Club 30.

seems to work well for him, he gets a lot of sounds he needs out of it.

I've got no need for anything like the helix but it does seem to be pretty imressive.

I've been using a few mustangs, prior to that had a line 6 pod and a VOX advt30 the mustang imho beat out all of them for sounds/and feature. But I think the helix is something completely different.

Good luck!

A good friend is using a Kemper Profiler and it sounds great!

I have heard an eleven rack played thru a mission Gemini. pretty impressive system. it would cost about 2 grand to get both of them.

I like the sound of my blackstar, and use my zoom multieffects pedal. total price-about 800.00

if I was gigging more, I would take a serious look at the 11

Yeah, pics or it didn't happen.
I got my tracking number for the Helix. I've been reading the manual. I think we're starting to get to the point where everyday life is rocket science.

I played around with amp modeling a few years back with some recording but the truth is that the more I tried to get in to it, the further I got from the sounds I was trying to achieve. I've played around with POD's, Behringers, Digitechs, some software packages (ala Amplitube), etc., and pretty much just ended up going back to my plain pedals thru my amps. For myself I finally discovered that, in this case at least, the simplest solution was the best.

Now I will say that I do use a guitar synth for a lot of stuff...but that's usually to achieve sounds other than guitar. I use an older Roland GR 30 for stuff like piano/keyboard fill, sax, flute, etc., and it's even got a pretty groovy banjo setting, LOL! That said, for guitar specific work, again I'm usually straight into a pedal or two and directly into one of my amps.

Sometimes you just can't beat "back to basics".

the modeling technology is improving all the time, so a few years, -- is an eternity.

but,... a real good tube amp and a few well placed/well chosen pedals will still get the job done with the minimal amount of shenanigans or hoop-jumping (eg: editing / tweaking presets)

one of the huge advantages with for example the Mustangs, is how easily you can haul them in, set them up, and load out. To me, that's where they are worth the investment.

I'll admit that I'm going to hedge my bet by keeping three tube amps and several of my favorite pedals. Lately, I've been master of my domain, being able to extract some pretty good clones of the recorded tones, for the covers we're doing. I'm hoping I'll be able to continue that with the Helix. I just wish FedEx would step on the gas pedal!!

The Helix came a few days ago. I've only had three 20 minute sessions with it so far. This is the space shuttle of guitar effects. Seriously impressive and easy to use. Eventually I'll be getting an FRFR amp/speaker. In the mean time, I'm putting the helix into the return of my tube amp fx loop. It sounds great with this setup. I just use a preamp model. I love my tube amps, but I'm really glad I got the Helix. The options that this unit opens up, are mind boggling.
