I could use some advice from people who use monitors to mix and master. Currently, I'm using headphones, but I'd like to buy a pair of good quality, low-priced reference monitors, say under $400 for a pair (this is already more money than my meager talent is worth).

Some of the brands I'm considering are:

Mackie - Good reputation, but they've just come out with the MR5 line. It's so new there are no reviews;

KRK Rockit - Same with this brand, they've just come out with Generation 2 and discontinued the very popular old line;

M-Audio BX5 - It seems most anything m-audio turns out gets mixed reviews. I had some bad luck with them myself, but I might take another chance on them.

Anyone have experience with these brands? Other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I'm using Event TR8's and I'm very happy with them.

KRK's Rokit Generation 2 powered studio monitors sound great! I'd definitely go check out a pair of these and hear for yourself.

Hey bro! I personally use Behringer Truth Monitors and the pair cost me about $400.00. They have a beautiful sound and more than enough oomph to blow your ears out of your head if you want them to. They also have adjustable input trim to help you dial them in to exactly where you want them to be. I was so happy with them that I bought a Behringer 1204FX digital board as well to go with them and the whole package is nothing short of amazing for the little bit of cash that you have to spend. Rock on man!!! 8)

Steve, I'm using Samson monitors-they are the Sam Ash brand- they are ok, and at the time for $250 a pair, were in my budget. However if I had it to do over, I would have definately gone for the KRKs - I would see if you could still find a pair of the older models-my guess is that they should be a great deal right now-I know I've seen the 5's on sale for $99 each. It's worth checking out. Good luck.

Yes, Musician's Friend had them for $99 ea, but I missed the sale (traveling). I'll be checking a few Guitar Centers to see if they have any of the originals left.

Thanks for your input.
