Yesterday, I decided to try something on a whim... I was goofing around on Amazon and found a very simple, very basic, delay pedal that's made in China called Blue Ocean. It's supposed to be a clone of the Mad Professor Deep Blue pedal.

$28 bucks or something like that + shipping on Amazon. Made in China. If it turns out to be a real POS, and falls apart or shorts out a few days later, well then... Lesson learned.

However, if it really and truly works with up to 600ms of delay, and doesn't pop, hiss, or affect my tone at all, I will be really happy!

I got a confirmation email from Amazon and they said it should arrive as early as Apr 28th. Cross your fingers that it will work! :)

Mate I use a Joyo noisegate on one rig. Cost £28. Perfectly serviceable. Never had an issue with it.

All the components in pedals come from China anyway. May as well let them put em together too.

Thanks... I just hope it works!

You see, originally I was going to build another BYOC pedal from their online kits (their version of a delay pedal), but then considered tapping into my "electronic geek side" and go buy some perfboard from Radio Shack and build one of my own. Then I realized that I am not that good with electronics, schematics, etc... and would get confused with "rolling my own" on a perfboard or veroboard to a schematic from those DIY pedal websites.

So... I figured I'd try something extremely cheap through Amazon, and if it turns out to be a POS, well then, I'm only out about $28 bucks if that. Then, I'll go buy a quality delay pedal and learn from my mistake.

That's probably true for many pedals, but not all.

That is a cool piece, Spaceman, handmade, NOS parts, look at the wiring install, rock solid. How much did it cost?

I think I paid approximately $350 after currency conversion, from a dealer in Australia.
Which is not bad given how much manual work and pre-tested parts has gone into it, and that it has been tweaked by someone with a good ear. $350 divided by two years now, and probably the rest of my life, is not much money. A $150 pedal to be replaced every two years would be a heck of a lot more expensive. Never mind if it broke down mid-song. Like a good amp, guitar and mics, the feeling that I can trust the gear to just work is worth saving up for, for me. YMMV - others prefer cheap and disposable so they can change more often with less out-of-pocket expense.

Unfortunately, like with Klon Kentaur and some older Pete Cornish pedals, the production runs were too short, and the aftermarket prices are insane. Don't even go to reverb.com to look what people want for them. Sure, they shouldn't lose much in value, because they're quality through and through, but this collector's craze needs to stop. It just prevents musicians from buying them.

I have some really good sounding and functional JOYO (Chinese) pedals.
The one I didn't care for is the noise gate. Their amp simulation pedals sound very authentic, but tend to be somewhat 'hissy' (as often are the amps they emulate and the more expensive pedals from which they're cloned). Tried to eliminate the hiss with the JOYO, but it did nothing. Tried the cheap Behringer noise gate, and it did the job.
The JOYO Sweet Baby and Deluxe Crunch are very good and are quiet.

What did the noisegate in for you IM4Tone?
A friend had one that's a dud. Mine seems to suddenly hit a point where it's like it's clamping fully.

It seemed it did absolutely nothing?

I know you didn't ask me, but I've been using a ROCKTRON HUSH pedal (the big blue one) very happily for years. I use it both as a noise reduction for guitar and feedback prevention for my harmonica.

For a brief period a few years ago, I used the ISP Decimator G-String, but the high cost coupled with some irritating metallic trailing overtones at the end of sustained notes made me sell it pretty quickly...it also didn't like the harp mic, so...

Hmmm war with Germans, now control EU, war with communism, now flood markets, war with Islamic state. I see a trend here, tomorrow I'm buying as many miles of fabric as I can get, get the wife to start making burkahs, unless it's sand they intend taking us over with, might get her to fling some deck chairs together while she's at it, this time next year she'll be a burkah wearing millionaire or deck chair attendant.........just a bit of humour :D
Hope you enjoy the pedal Butch 8)

I know noisegates alright. I've a 2203KK that has a really good noisegate built in. Which is a necessity for the gain levels on that amp.
I bought the Joyo one because my old singer thought he could play guitar. He couldn't control his guitars volume knob with any sort of speed, or even use a tuner. So I let him use the 2203KK and I used either my JVM or JMP. I put noisegate on my board with a delay and a tuner.
I like the Joyo one. I use it with my Mesa now, I have it taped into my humble rack. The Joyo clamps at the input stage and the noisegate on my G-System clamps in the loop. It makes for a very very tight amp. The gate on the G-Sys isn't easy to use. Too many parameters to adjust, so I could have it set wrong. It works though I can notice when it's on. Unlike the Joyo. The only thing I notice with the Joyo is that the amp doesn't feedback. I have it's single control set to around 9-10 oclock with my strats and around 11-12 with my EMG loaded guitars. Much higher and it clamps too much, notes start getting cut short.

I was looking for the dual Hush to use at the input and the loop. This setup works well though.
I know Joyo aren't consistent in their quality. Like I said, my friend has one and it's terrible, makes all sorts of weird noises. I either got lucky or he got unlucky. For the £20 odd I paid for it, I'm certainly not complaining.

Thanks... As soon as it arrives, I will put it through its paces and test it all out.

Caline CP-19 Blue Ocean Delay
Fender Strat (clean & gain channel)
Gretsch 5122 hollow body (clean rockabilly tone)
Fender Frontman 65r amp

I'll make a short You Tube video after I get it all hooked up in my small pedalboard...

EDIT: Oops... Looks like someone already beat me to it!

As a man who has long held the belief that you get what you pay for, I will be watching this thread.
Part of me hopes the pedal works as advertised.
Part of me hopes it doesn't.
All of me fears a future where 3rd world labour takes away my livelihood.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

If people realize that ultra-cheap products won't be supported for very long, and that the producer's interest doesn't extend longer than executing his contract for a factory run as cheaply as possible, your job won't be in that much danger. But if they accept consumerism, where nothing is built to last beyond instant gratification (like with cell phones, which some change more often than their trousers), yes, we need to worry.

I wouldn't mind offshoring so much if it all went to permanent jobs. But alas, that's not what happens. Overall, the global workforce becomes less and less secure, livelihoods being bought and sold with the lowest bidder.
That's the values we have taught them, and continue to teach them every time we adjust our 401(k) looking at ROI and not ethical concerns.

I'm sure the pedal will work well enough - out of the box.
