Billy Paul (Me And Mrs. Jones 1972) is reported having died today because of a heart condition at the age of 80. BBC also mentioned that in the 60s he served and met with Elvis while in the Army. He is said to have discussed forming a band with him, but Elvis preferred to drive a jeep.

Elvis was a 19-Kilo, M-48 tank crewman. Had he been merely a wheeled-vehicle driver, his MOS would've been 88-Mike.

I remember that song. I was an infant when it first came out, but I've heard it many times since then. I'm sorry to hear about this. RIP, Billy Paul :(

Hey, Arjay. Tank crewman was what I knew too. But, Jeep was what was reported by BBC. They might have gotten that info. here:

You're welcome, Rollie. 'Me and Mrs. Jones'. Gawd, I love that song as only Billy can do it justice IMHO. Segue to Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' and I'm good for the night.

FSB
Thanks, for the vibes Billy.

Add Percy Sledge's "When A Man Loves A Woman" to that mix and call them an opus triumvirate.

Somehow I missed this sad news until now and found out he died Sunday. I was doing top-40 radio when his big record came out. "Me and Mrs. Jones" was a really smooth record with members of what would become the MFSB, Salsoul and Love Unlimited orchestras playing on it and the hit making team of Gamble-Huff arranging and producing it. In spite of the fact that Gamble-Huff's fingerprints are over it this record was different from most of the other stuff they were churning out of Philadelphia, much of which did not stand the test of time as well as this one record. It was in the "A" rotation for so long that I am pretty sure I could recite the lyrics all the way through. Good memories! But do not ask what I had for lunch today, I can't remember that.

Of course no classic R&B compendium would be truly complete without some Otis Redding. "Try A Little Tenderness" gets my vote......

Thanks, for the Philly background on Billy's hit song, brotherdave. That explains a whole lot. With a team like that, how could you not win? Credit to all who created what I call nothing short of magic,

One of those songs that never leaves your head. YMMV.
