Realizing this thread is about Prince, I'm hoping that the previous drug discussion has little or no bearing on Prince's situation. I'm of the camp that believes that his talent was completely in his soul and not in his veins. Whether he indulged or not, I can't say.

Having said that, here is one take (although, not about a guitarist, a famous artist all the same) on how the use of one well known drug may or may not affect the creative juices, and the execution of the same. YMMV.

This is an interesting choice considering the time frame. Marihuana remains quite controversial and this article has to be taken in the historical context. If you "Google'' search 'hemp' you're going to come up with a constellation of citations which will make for interesting reading. I eave it to you to come to your own conclusions. Of course, in keeping with our tradition....YMMV.

Prince was a prolific and talented guy. My opinion on narcotics is a simple one , "If you use you'll lose" I can testify based on a long fight with addiction and almost 20 years clean in recovery. The loss of so many great, and tragically short lived artists far out weighs any possible enhancement the drugs may give. Drug use is a personal decision, and I'm not on a soapbox, however using in the misguided attempt to be a better musician is ill advised at best.
R.I.P Prince your music made an impact on many and for an artist that is the final measure.

To lighten the subject here is a video that sums up, IMHO, the true contribution drugs make to music...

Hahaha! That's good! :)

Congrats for the 20 years clean and sober!!!

Yeah, I agree with your stance that drug use is a personal decision... not a good one in my case and that's all that I really care about (well, other than not wanting to be around unstable people who are still using!), but it also pisses me off when people are judgmental and look down on people who use... they just don't get what a struggle it is.

Struggle? On the right is a spoonful of rat poison, on the left is a spoonful of heroin. You've never ingested either. Which one do you choose, and why? :?:

That video was a great addition Eroot64. and your corresponding comments are a welcome addition.

The video does bring some question as to the whether the drug influenced playback always gives the straight or non-drugged recipient the same feedback. Maybe better, maybe worse.

My experience with spaced out performers has been everything from okay to work with to complete catastrophes. Worse are the broken and painful relationships, and unnecessary loss of life. I know this because of life experiences, growing up in Lotus Land, home of mushrooms, poppies, and BC Bud. I know I'm not alone here having family, friends, and work associates who have given me an active education from marijuana to heroin (including support for withdrawals), and a great deal in between. In fact, on my first day at a new job, for which I travelled 1500 miles to get, I was asked if I'd be interested in joining in with the heads. I've played musical chairs with coke addicts. I'd like to proclaim each to their own; but, without the need to debate the issue, my experience is to inform you that private consideration never seems to develop that way. There are many degrees of addiction as has been covered here and elsewhere; but, culture and association with others can also be addictive, and even though the sun shines on you when times are good, dangers exist in the shadows that may come looking for you when you least expect it. Others will always be affected, unless you live in a grow op bubble. If that's the road you choose, the journey will be long and usually not rewarding. It is, of course, your trip.

I'll take it straight up, thanks. At least the odds of WYSIWYG are better. YMMV.

FSB
Eroot64. Your 20 years of drug free life is a celebration to behold.
For the others: I truly hope you'll never start, and if you indulge that you'll quit to find all the good that life has to offer. Please, share it, don't abuse it, and most of all, don't lose it.

Until then:
Peace

Doc the truth is if substance abuse wasn't enjoyable. No one would do it a second time.
There is a fight for those unlucky enough to get snared. And talking to long time victors over their desires. The fight may lessen but being constantly aware of it is the price paid.

This is now an orchestrated tragedy I fear. Said my prayer for Prince, now just have to let go.

Not everybody wants to set up a will. It can be quite hard emotionally, and it doesn't benefit the person who writes it. (I've chickened out on that myself.)

As for cremation and no lying in state, I believe that was a religious decision. Jehova's Witnesses don't allow messing with a person's blood, and the FDA won't allow corpses to be displayed without embalming. So this was likely honoring Prince's wishes.

That's an inaccurate statement.

Jehovah's Witnesses refuse to take blood transfusions or transfusions of major blood components (I.e., plasma, packed red blood cells, etc.).

Medical procedures such as blood work (laboratory tests), plasmapheresis, dialysis, a heart/lung bypass machine, cell savers, etc. are up to the conscience of the individual, as are the use of certain blood fragments.

If person wants to be embalmed and displayed, there is no prohibition of that practice.

I assume Prince just didn't want pictures of his corpse on TMZ and People magazine.

Edited for spelling.
