Just been told that Prince, 57 years old, has been found dead in his home. Don't know the full story yet.

Update: This is presently being reported on several News channels. Apparently, there was a recent hoax about Prince's death circling the globe. But, deputies are saying that today a body was found at his recording studio in Paisley Park, Chanhassen, Minnesota. It has been confirmed by authorities that Prince is indeed dead, as I write. :( Hopefully, the hoaxes will fade away in time. Sadly, another great loss of immense legendary talent.

Rest In Peace and Rock On Prince Rogers Nelson.

It is no hoax this time. Prince died alone in the elevator between his living quarters and the studio section of his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota sometime this morning.

The one thing about Prince Rogers Nelson that impressed me most was the way he could rock a Telecaster, especially live. He made it look deceptively easy and always made his guitar solos look like he was just having fun. He had a New Year's Eve live concert on TV years ago and that was really the first time I actually saw him play guitar live and I was astounded. After that New Year's Eve telecast I paid him way more attention. He either had an obvious gift as a guitarist or practiced his butt off. Either way his guitar skills were underrated partly because he wasn't rock, partly because his records were played on Top-40 and partly because of the controversy his art so often spawned. So he never got the credit due him as a guitar god, even though he was a jaw dropping player.

When he was still a teen he became the youngest producer in Warner Brothers Records history because they recognized his all around musical genius based upon a demo on which he played every instrument and sang all the vocals.

I always thought his Superbowl XLI halftime show in a driving rainstorm was one of the best ever ranking with or maybe even trumping Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones in both style and content. Pulling off that stylish show in that weather was a remarkable achievement. Whenever Prince performed he owned the stage, but at that Superbowl he also owned the weather.

This past Saturday he played his last show, an impromptu concert at his annual "Paisley Park After Dark" open house for a very small crowd of under 100 people, mostly his neighbors. He had recently been battling the flu and postponed two Atlanta concerts April 7, but did those shows last week. Flying home from Atlanta to Minneapolis after the makeup shows his plane made an emergency landing in Moline, Illinois and he was briefly treated at the hospital there for about three hours, then flew on home.

At this moment, and once again in the rain, people are gathering at Paisley Park. There are flowers being left along the wall. Grown men and women, some with umbrellas are just standing and crying across the street from the entrance gate to Prince's Paisley Park home studio complex. Mostly these people are the same neighbors who came to his annual open house parties.

Lots will be said and written about him today and in days to come. The White House just released a very elegant statement and more are sure to follow. To me it is even more notable that Prince himself wrote something that eerily foreshadowed this day back in 1984 within the lyrics to "Let's Go Crazy" which starts off like this:

"Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today
To get through this thing called life

Electric word life
It means forever and that's a mighty long time
But I'm here to tell you
There's something else
The after world

A world of never ending happiness
You can always see the sun, day or night

So when you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills
You know the one, Dr. Everything'll Be Alright
Instead of asking him how much of your time is left
Ask him how much of your mind, baby

'Cause in this life
Things are much harder than in the after world
In this life
You're on your own

AND IF THE ELEVATOR TRIES TO BRING YOU DOWN
GO CRAZY, PUNCH A HIGHER FLOOR...."

Wow, this is hard to believe! This year has been pretty surreal so far with this. RIP, Prince. :( Purple Rain was part of the soundtrack of my youth.

One frequently says about numerous artists that "he can do it all". In Prince's case, he not only could do it all, but he did it all masterfully. And his live performances?? Ridiculously good live ... arguably the best live performer ever.

WOW !!

R.I.P. Prince Rogers Nelson

Thanks for the Music !!

Ironically, just 2 weeks ago I was in New Orleans meeting up w/ some musicians I know. One of them said he was just up in Minneapolis as he had a 2-week gig doing session work for Prince at Paisley Park for a planned upcoming release.

He said the place was amazing and Prince a great musician and an excellent host (he was housed at the complex).

But, he said he was glad to be back in NOLA because the number of girls (he's married w/ 2 kids) and the amount of 'Powder' flowing through the place was disturbing and actually disrupted a lot of the studio time.

He warned me: "That guy's appetites are going to be his downfall... just wait and see... !"

I thought his reaction was a little strange, if not excessive... until today.

The Coroner will release the Tox Screen and then we'll know...

Another loss to be sure...

Cheers!
