You are going to hear or have heard already about Steve Miller "melting down" and "launching into an unanticipated obscenity laced tirade" at his Hall Of Fame induction. The Black Keys have already done a press release saying they wish they had not agreed to introduce him and that the most unpleasant part of the event was being in the presence of Steve Miller. My view is that possibly the Black Keys are trying to milk some publicity out of this, otherwise why bother with a press release? Frankly I think the HOF could have found someone more appropriate to induct him than the Black Keys anyway.

So far as I have been able to discern at this point, exactly what Steve Miller did was rehash much of what is wrong with the HOF selection process, the big money end of the business, the HOF's treatment of inductees and raping of their copyrights. Mr. Miller has some very valid points, almost all of which have been raised before by others and yet have gone totally unaddressed by the HOF. It was some of the same old same old with a huge portion of frustration at how easily some of it could be fixed.

I applaud Steve Miller's courage in standing up to the HOF's inflated self-importance. The HOF seems to feel that inducting any artist gives them rights to their images and sound files in any form from still photos to videos to live and studio recordings. The HOF thinks they should be entitled to use everything they can get their hands upon while charging inductees $10,000 per ticket for every ticket beyond the two tickets given each inductee, one of which the inductee needs to get in the door.

The media is pouncing on Miller like he is some sort of nut job, but really all he said were things that have all been said before. It is just that he was far more emphatic and obviously frustrated by the HOF process and chose to unleash it all during the ceremony. He did vent some at the pre-induction press conference but really cut loose in the ceremony. The floor director at the press conference told him to wrap it up but he replied he was going to come over there and wrap them up and continued until he was done. I am not sure how much of what he said at the ceremony itself will be edited out before airing on HBO.

He is entirely on the money about the HOF's puzzling reluctance to induct obviously qualified women in rock. It took the Eagles shifting the focus of their HOF pre-induction press conference from their induction to the HOF's puzzling omission of Linda Ronstadt and other women before the HOF even considered inducting Ronstadt.

So before you join in the Steve Miller bashing, maybe it is the HOF that needs bashing instead of Steve Miller. The Black Keys said they wished they had stayed home with their families but maybe it was Steve Miller that should have stayed home, ignored the HOF dog and pony show entirely and then sued their pants off when they violated his copyrights.
(edited for grammar)

I agree with you brotherdave. I would state my opinion, but you've already said it better than I could anyway.

+1, brotherdave.

It's about time someone took the RRHoF to task for their antics, many of which have absolutely nothing at all to do with rock and roll or rock and roll artists.

Great post brotherdave.
I saw Steve Miller live in early '69 open for Sly and the Family Stone and he mesmerized the audience. After listening to the Black Keys I can say that those clowns would have been thrown out of that auditorium. They wouldn't have got through their set. I know, they're millionaires and don't care that much of modern music won't live up to the standard for good set by musicians of other generations. That is terrible for young people listening today.
Sorry if I disturbed any Black Keys listeners.

I would have done like the Sex Pistols did and told them to piss off and not even shown up, if I were Steve Miller and felt like he did. I guess he thought that would be more effective to do that instead.

As for the Black Keys, they're some hipster band whose popularity has probably caused the price of cheesy 60's guitars that you guys from that era had starting out to be jacked up, because they play those. :P

you know how PC we are these days,, don't say anything the moon-bats don't want to hear... you'll have to leave the planet.

RRHOF has become one of the most irrelevant artifacts in the music industry. I pay absolutely zero attention to anything these twits set out to do. The last "right" thing they did was induct Rush, and Alex Lifeson's speech,, pretty much rolled it all up in a nice 3 minute tangent.. "Blah,, Blah,, Blah-blah, blah, blah.."

Screw the whole thing,, means nothing.

NEXT!

Just my opinion but the HOF reflects Corporate America values. It's a flashy piece of work (the building, the displays the spectacles they put on). They have token women and the "right" minorities in there. But in the end, so it's said, most of those elected are there based on impact on record company revenue. Yes, some also have talent but the key is that they sold records.

The day they induct Marilyn Manson in the Country Music Hall of Fame, is the day I pay more attention to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Alice Cooper got inducted (I almost wrote indicted) in 2011. Alice Cooper 2.0 may get his day too.

MC5 and 13th Floor Elevators, on the other hand, probably won't, despite having actively shaped music and R&R. Not enough records sold.

Funny, I was thinking yesterday about suggesting "You're Gonna Miss Me" as a song to do, to my band. I have the single. The 13th Floor Elevator's were ahead of their time.

wait.....what? What are "token women" and the "right" minorities? :|

the only problem I see is they didn't name it properly - the "Popular Music Hall of Fame".

They sure were. There are more songs than that one too, even though You're Gonna Miss Me and Reverbation are the only ones that gets some play time (mostly through cover versions).

I heard that Roky Erickson is still touring Texas. While there are people who never got home from Woodstock, he's the one that got lost on the way there.

Two Headed Dog is part of my songlist. (Although I lack the Texas knack of pronouncing "dog" with three syllables.)
