Recently my fellow bandmates decided to retire from playing live gigs, so I have decided to try doing some home recordings.
Since I grew up listening to Merle Haggard and since he was definitely a big influence on me, I decided to pay a small tribute to him and record one of my favorite Hag songs, Here In Frisco.
It's a nice, easy song and I play all the parts pretty simple, but unfortunately not by choice. Except for the drums. They are built in tracks on my Zoom R8, which I used to make the recording.
I'm playing my Am Stnd P5 on the base line.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.

It's telling me the video is "private".
Doesn't play.
That said, I like the idea of paying tribute to a fine picker such as Merle.

Got it changed to public, so it should work now.
Thanks for letting me know.

I'm no expert on Merle but that's a very tasteful rendition.

Outstanding recording technique and a fine video collage as well.

Thanks guys.

This was my first completed home project. Experimented a little at first of course. First time really working the board, recording and mixing. As mentioned above I'm using my Zoom R8. Nice little recorder with lots of great features, which I have yet to master. I'm mixing it on my computer with Studio One. Another great tool with many features, most of which are beyond my knowledge. So I'm doing lots of internet research on those.

I'm also pretty much limited due to my skill level as a player. That's probably what limits me the most at this time. Since picking up the bass some 37 years ago I have seldom played anything else and when I did it usually was just messing around here at home having fun and not really trying to grow as a player. The little keyboard bits I put in, well I borrowed my granddaughters inexpensive Yamaha, googled piano chords and manage to put some in, barely.....

I've been playing my guitar regularly everyday for the last several weeks trying to build up my skill level. I'm afraid old age and arthritis is catching up with me though.

This has always been one of my favorite Merle songs and it just so happens to sound okay with very little production. Kind of like all well written songs do. So I'm trying to play within myself in order to produce the best sounding recording that I am capable of. Which results in a bare produced recording, but I prefer quality over quantity. Quality equaling the best I am capable of producing which I hope improves as I continue.

Again thanks for the compliments. They are much appreciated.

Gary

That was a pleasure to listen too. Thanks for posting such a nice tribute to Merle Haggard. He was a treasure to country music lovers everywhere. Where would we be without people like him, and so many other great musicians to learn from? A true legend.
You don't have to explain anything regarding your production techniques. It was all just fine, and much better sounding than a lot of the recordings from back in the day. The ones that laid the foundation for the country music that we now have. Good for you!

Thanks Solina Dave......
Merle Haggard was a pioneer in the country field. He and Buck Owens developed the "Bakersfield Sound". They played and recorded what Nashville wouldn't at the time.
He was such a gifted song writer and performer. He wrote and sang about his own life, so those who followed his music felt they knew him.
I guess I did over explain myself. I'm just frustrated that I limit myself due to my ignorance of recording/mixing technics. Thank goodness for the inexpensive recording equipment that's available these days. They make it possible for someone like me to produce a recording that sounds decent.
Also extremely frustrated with my guitar playing. Like a lot of bass players, I started out on guitar. I never was very good with it, so when I picked up the bass I pretty much forgot about guitar. Now I regret that. There are songs I want to record that I just can't cut it on guitar. Luckily, one of the guys I played with is willing to come over and lay down some tracks for me.
I am practicing on guitar everyday. This old dog is determined to learn new tricks.

I got some advice from a couple of friends, then I did a re-mix. I think it sounds better now.

P.S. I edited the video above with this latest audio mix.

Hard to believe there was room to improve such a simple yet elegant arrangement but somehow, you found it.

Very nice!
