I love a lot of his songs, and he had some brilliant guit-slingers in his band (...he wasn't a slouch himself, in that regard!)

I really liked his "Tuff Dog" Tele, too. I got to play one once, then panicked when I saw the price tag.

In the early days of the Screamin' Armadillos, we often did a Honky Tonk/Blues version of "Think I'll Just Stay Here And Drink" whenever the rednecks in the audience got restless.

A country band I was with always did "Silver Wings" and "Workin' Man Blues."

I think I'll go home and try to remember how to play them tonight.

Who is left of the early practitioners of the "Bakersfield Sound"?

Outside of singers Jean Sheppard and Susan Raye, I can't think of anybody.

That's the country music that I grew up listening to (I was born in 1971,) before I even got into listening to any sort of rock music. He was one of the artists, besides Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, etc. Maybe that's what taught me how to put a song together and gave me a love of Telecasters. I wonder how many of the old school are still left? Loretta Lynn is still around. Hank Williams Jr., although he's a little younger, but still from that era.

RIP, Merle. :(

A real shame. We're losing many legends lately it seems.
