If you are considering serious off roading, such as logging roads, or roads that are full of major rocks, or if you simply have a difficult to make turnaround, or discover washout roads that look good when dry only to reveal hidden obstacles when raining, you'll want to have beefy skid plates that can save you a lot of headaches later. Stock skid plates work for mild adventures, but they are often too flimsy, or in limited abundance for the more challenging stuff. So I would put skid plates high on the list of requirements.

A heavy bush bar gives protection and looks good; but, it does give the front end alignment and all a workout.

If you know some of the tricks for off roading you're good to go. Otherwise, you'll want to learn things like the best way to roll over peaks and valleys (rocks and crevasses), how to take the vehicle down hill without rolling over, and one neglected thing is how to use the wheel without it whipping back and breaking your hand, wrist, or even arm. Wheel offset will allow either a wide turn with stability for high speed trails or you can choose less stability with tight turns for narrow trails. The more tire outside the more mud slinging, the more wear on suspension, and kickback.

As for rough terrain, I tackled West Coast cougar country back roads for fishing so I've been there done that, but not until my truck was ready, and it paid off with a little knowledge from the experienced. Of course, driving with buddies tagging along reduces the risk of being stranded. Enjoy this great world of ours, Buxom. Off roading is a great way to discover nature's offerings. Looking forward to your project's progress.

Oh, and to keep this post musical . . . bring a guitar on your off road journey. :D

Sadly, my Galaxy S6 has kicked the bucket (for now) so I've only got one photo of progress so far, which I uploaded to Facebook.

Yeah, hopefully you'll get a good refund for that.

Cam seals and crank seal done today.

Water pump is also done.

Friday I'll be doing the timing bearings and the timing belt, along with the reassambly of the cooling system. 3 new front belts. After that, it'll be a new catty. I don't need new exhaust entirely, the cat was just cut out.

After that, it'll be power steering and the shifter assembly. After that, it'll be brakes. After that, it'll be tie rods, pitman arms, and CV boots. After that, it'll be tires and alignment.

Mixed in with these things is a few new lug studs and new nuts all around, as well as figuring the back door out and the sunroof.

My manager gave me a set of rims for this truck today. They're a set of steelies that came off of a 90s Tacoma that were destined for the trash. Personally, I like them better. They're more durable than alloys, they're easier to balance, and they look more utilitarian.

As for mods, I think I'm going to keep it clean. I'm definitely going to get a rear spare mount kit and a roof rack, maybe a brush guard, and maybe a 1" lift.

Things are going well, guys.

I'm thinking I may buy the power steering pump/hoses tomorrow just to get everything under the hood out of the way. Then I'll buy new hoses for everything else as well.

I'm so ready to take this thing out on the road. Its killing me.

My check was about $100 more than expected, so yes, I can do the power steering today.

Bearings installed and power steering disassembled. Waiting on the pump to be delivered. Hopefully tomorrow or the next day. After pair the pump with the old parts (reservoir, switch, valve, etc) I'm going to reassemble the engine.

Also, I should probably put a new thermostat in there. I'll have to check tomorrow if the parts stoee has it.
