The transmission in my Camry failed, so I sold it for $500, then picked up this truck for $500.

It's a 1993 Toyota 4Runner. The body and frame are in excellent condition, it runs, drives, and stops, and that's what counts for now.

It needs a water pump, a power steering pump, CV boots, new tires, a little bit of steering linkage work, and an interior overhaul. It also needs a full shifter assembly, but I'm not sure where to source one other than a junkyard.

I'm going to be doing this on a budget, withe myself and a repair guide, and the help of a coworker.

I get discounts on parts because of my job having a contract with my local auto parts store.

I already bought a water pump and timing belt. When we do that, I'll take some pictures of the process and post em up.

Have a good day, guys!

Not exactly a small job.
Best of luck to you!
Hope you get 'er first try.

Yea, there'll be a lot of first tries lol.

I can't wait to tear into it. The only thing I don't want to try by myself is the water pump/timing belt. The rest seems to be very straightforward.

CV boots? Isn't the 4-runner a solid rear axle?

First make sure you don't need any special tools for the timing belt, otherwise as long as you know how to put cylinder 1 at top dead center, a timing belt job is pretty straight forward. Since you're getting in there, I also recommend accessory belts and a front main seal replacement.

CV boots on the front, homie.

My coworker is gonna walk me through a few seals. I know we've got cam seal, a crank seal, and a timing seal in order. The trans and oil pan have already had their seals redone, thankfully.

You know about these trucks? I'm having a bit of a tough time troubleshooting the back door. It won't open no matter what I do to it. I've manually pulled the cable (the door panel is missing) and nothing happens. Even when it's unlocked and pushed out from the inside, it won't budge.

My main questions are on the shifter assembly. The key won't come out of the ignition if the battery is connected. The shifter is crazy wobbly and apparently it needs a new bushing. I'm guessing because of the wonky shifter, the car this reads as being in gear when you go to turn it off and that's why it won't turn off past "acc". I can't be sure, it could also be an ignition switch or something related.

Also, if you've got a good PDF of a guide to the front main seal, I'd love to see it. I got the autozone app, but the guide isn't clear on it imo.

Hey, how's the radio in that thing anyway? Not too bad? Or needs an upgrade?

Already upgraded by the previous owners.

Good luck with the repairs. What's the body shape like? Is it rusted out at all or been in an accident? It looks pretty good from what I can see in the pic, anyhow.

Not too familiar with 4 runners. I thought even the 4x4 have solid front axle too.

Body and frame are excellent.

It was in a minor accident, the previous owner was tipsy and hit a ball hitch, clipping the front passenger bumper. My manager's friend was at work when I towed it there and popped it out in the parking lot in exchange for me plugging his tire.

That 4runner is a real workhorse. One site has recently rated 4Runner as 3rd best longest lasting vehicle (according to a Wikipedia posting).

Having been through the 80s 4x4 mill, I know they can be an expensive repair and maintenance vehicle; but, in the right hands, and with some luck, you can reap the benefits of having a great SUV with access to great 3rd party parts.

Congrats, and best of luck on your project, Buxom.

Thanks guys, everyone says it's a great deal at work. I'm excited for the roads (or lack thereof) ahead.

I'm sad to say that it's not stick shift, just to clear the air. If it were, I probably would have paid a lot more than $500.

Have the front end of the engine partially pulled apart.

Will post pics when progress is completed on this section.
