Yesterday a friend of mine called me and asked me if I wanted to buy his Crate XT-65R combo . He was only asking $50.00 for it. While it works like a charm and sounds great, the tolex on both sides is all scratched up , no thanks to his cat . I'm thinking about seeing if there is anyone in my area would put some new tolex on it. I just don't have any idea what something like that would cost. If anybody has a idea, let me know. Thanks.

I think the cost of labor and materials would be more than you paid for the amp. IMO you would be better off DIY. You might learn something and save money. If you muck it up you can always start over and it wouldn't look any worse than the cat attack. Or just play the damn thing and not worry about the cosmetics.

Agreed. It's a cat crate!

I'd just brush black paint on it to get the "fur" to lie down and restore some moisture proofing.

Yep that's about what I'd do, or you could always fill the sides up with cool stickers or bumper stickers or a good quality Gaff Tape like Permacel.

I say just replace the cat, the last one clearly missed the entire top of the amp.

C'mon guys, it's not actually that bad sounding at all. The clean on this is really nice and the Gain can give you some nice sustain. I'm just going to use it s a practice amp for home use. I did check with some stores yesterday and it would just cost too much to have it retolexed , so I'm going take off the tolex and put a couple of coats of laquer on the cabinet to give it a nice wood stained look.

A previous owner of my first amp (Gibson G-20) did that same thing...I later added the stickers and branded it.

I just got done taking off the Black tolex which was all scratched up. I kind of like the natural look here although I'm probably going to put some varnish on it tomorrow. Looks a lot better than when it did when I got it on Sunday, that's for sure.

Yes I think it looks better already. A nice coat of Poly, Varnish or Shellac will be a nice touch. My 1969 Fender Super Reverb has either a shellac or the varnish finish, as I got it that way and I do like the look, if I can think about this post tonight I will take a photo and post tomorrow

I agree looks much nicer. Take some fine sandpaper to smooth things out and even up the color then some polyurethane and it will look pretty good.

Progress on this , is coming along very well. As I posted yesterday, I did remove the tolex and today , I put some stain on it. I'm loving the way it looks, sort of a almost classic, tweed . Tomorrow I'll put the clearcoat on it and it'll be all set.

Shellac (the real deal) doesn't mix well with particle boards.
