Very unique sound and Must Have in some Jazz circles for a while. I haven't (to my ear) heard an entirely satisfactory digital reproduction. I still see Rhodes, some supposedly in good shape, on EBay but I'm not enough of a keyboard player to justify the purchase.

I surprised these haven't been reissued. A friend of my parents found one used a few years ago for only $400. It's in great shape and sounds beautiful...

Like the tube-driven Hammond B3, the Fender Rhodes is one of those timeless instruments for which digital emulation hasn't quite measured up. I've heard a few modern keyboards that sound close but some of the traditional "vibe" seems to be missing. Perhaps in a generation or two they'll get it right. But until then, FMIC would be wise to consider re-issuing the Stage 88.

Thanks for the link Paul.

If I could play piano, I would want a Fender Rhodes. In my keyboard class in college we used the old student models, you could hear a faint click through your headphones when the instructor would listen to your keyboard. I just can not remember any of what we were taught, lol.

Wow, that jogs an old memory. As I recall these were manufactured by ARP, right? I said it was an old memory.

ARP "The Chroma Polaris was the second synthesizer made by Fender/Rhodes after they took over ARP"

That's so cool.
Since getting my H9 I've started selling off pedals it is replacing and my Strymon Blue Sky was one of them. I had the smaller one. It sold along with the Ola (chorus) to a keyboard player. I was a little surprised a keys guy was buying guitar pedals but now I can see why. Sound-scapes. Very cool. Thanks for posting this.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

hi folks! Fun stuff!!
If ya look into the link Mike posted you'll see that Rhodes is owned by Roland.....at least I think it still is.....which is actually a pretty good home for it I think. It was sold to them quite a number of years ago....I believe when Harold Rhodes was still around.
Polaris had the misfortune of being released at the same time as the Yamaha DX7 which pretty much buried most other keyboards at the time.
Sometime in early 85 after Fender was bought by Schultz & Co. we had stacks of Polaris's hanging around and I remember that they gave us employees the opportunity to buy some for like $150 apiece. My memory is a bit fuzzy nowadays but it seems like I bought 6 of them...not all for me :O) 3 for our bass player, 3 for our guitarist and 3 for me as I recall. At any rate, for a bit I played my Rhodes with the Polaris stacked on it, then as I got tired of hauling the Rhodes around, since the Polaris had a decent Rhodes patch any way, I just played 2 Polaris's (80's cover band stuff whoo!)
They were quirky beasts though. Towards the end, I couldn't change programs on one and the other wouldn't tune ha haa....and the 3rd had ceased to exist altogether.
Anyway, they got used quite a lot playing out & recording both, so I definitely got my money's worth! Onboard sequencer, half analog half digital......good stuff!!
Hope you all are doing well! Cheers!

P.S. if you're interested or just bored lol, you can check out http://loudroundrecords.com/RhodesPiano.htm which has some interesting back stuff. Also if your mouse is brave, click around and there's 80's recording of yours truly under my own name as well as Steppes (in the "Church") --AND Joe Carducci (current head of Gretsch marketing) AND Paul Gagon ( famed pickup designer of Performer Bass, Elite Strats and several Jackson 80's guitars) and other "connected to the Big F "folks too ;O)
cheers, rob

From an old thread:

Jeremy Deatherage -Fender wrote:
I just talked to guy that needed new sliders for his Chroma Polaris. Unfortunately, FMIC hasn't had parts for those for over 20 years!

Personally, I've got a Wurlitzer electric piano that I love. I wouldn't pass up a chance at a Rhodes, though!
