Is anyone else using the free version of AVG's 8.0 anti-virus, and if so, any problems with updates today?

I just had to uninstall then re-install to get the latest updates and was wondering if it was a widespread issue? :?:

I used to use AVG but I ran into a few to many problems so I switched to Anti Vir. Free, more user friendly, better interface, updates daily to make sure your protected. :)

Is that the one by Avira?

Anyone else have suggestions for good freeware a/v apps ?

I've used and got rid of Avast, Norton, CA and Trend Micro. The IT boards seem to speak highly of AVG and Avast. :?:

I've used both Avast and AVG; I currently use (and recommend) AVG, if only because I find the voice that announces Avast's virus database is updated a bit annoying (and occasionally startling).

I haven't experienced your problem with AVG, but I don't have it on my machine here at work. When I get home I'll check and see if I'm having the update problem you mentioned.

I'm current;y using AVG and Avast and both work great! No problems at all (I'm running vista). I have AVG version 7.5.524 (The one previous to 8.0) and it works without any problems. Sometimes, if the updates won't download I just stop the automatic d-load attempts, close the downloader and then manually d-load them a few minutes later without any problems.

I've never used the word download so many times in one sentence.

I also had no problems with the older versions of AVG, but they stopped upgrades (at least around here) recently and advised all to download the new 8.0 version. After I re-installed it, I've had no problem. A nice feature is the advanced tool choices.

jbond1013g - I hated *that* Avast voice too.

That's strange. ...I get AVG updates every day with the older version.

From link below and what I have read on IT boards -

Update: AVG Technologies has dropped support for AVG 7.5 as of around the end of May 2008, so if you don't like or want to use AVG version 8, you'll need to seek another solution.

I did begin having trouble with AVG 7.5. My scans weren't being performed as scheduled, so I had to initiate them manually.

The other I day, I uninstalled it and downloaded AVG 8.0.
It still doesn't seem to be scanning at the time I'm asking it to, however.

I dunno what's up.

Just got home from a rained out ballgame/fireworks exhibition (grr!) and checked my machine: I have version 8.0.135 installed, and have had no upgrade problems.

Yesterday I was at 8.0.134, when I had the problem, but after dumping and the re-install, 8.0.135 is running fine.
