A great used condition standard MIM will run you around $300, but is something you can actually play for 10+ years and go on stage with, not worrying about it.

+1

This one-owner MIM Strat from 1998 has served me well for over 500 gigs......

Over the years it's been upgraded to near-US specs but even when new in dead-stock trim it was a fundamentally sound guitar that played right, sounded right, and looked right.

Thank you all for your input and replies!

That is a beautiful guitar Arjay and glad to hear it's done so well for you, that's what I'm hoping for!

Here is one that I don't think I can pass up, besides the pickguard, which I'd change to white I really love this color combo.

Now, I think this is a real MIM, looks like a correct neck, truss rod coloring, correct dots, plus the S/N.

Did they make it in Candy Apple Red? It's tough to see in the pictures if that's what it is, but, if it is, he wants $295 for the guitar, gig bag, straps, picks, and a Marshall practice amp. I just hope it's still available, if so, I think I can stop looking.

For $295, that's a steal. The guitar is authentic while the "bonus" amp and accessories are just icing on the cake.

Looks like CAR (Candy Apple Red) to me. Unless there are deep gouges you can't see, or a non-functioning pickup, this is a good guitar at a good price.

The price is about the same as Guitar Center would sell it for without any of the extras. By selling direct, the seller gets a bit more and you get a bit more.

Don't expect too much from the Marshall practice amp - they're certainly usable, especially for "Marshall clean" which is slightly dirty, and it won't break your back carrying it. But keep in mind that somewhere down the road, a good amp that does the guitar justice might be something to look for.

Good luck, and let us know how goes!

I certainly feel like it's a good deal, and when we do upgrade the amp, if I can sell that for $50, then I basically payed $250 for the guitar, which is even better...

So, I just got done speaking with the guy and I'm going to look at it tonight and buy it for $250 with the accessories as long as it's as represented.

An interesting thing that I learned is that this has a satin finish. Looks like in '03 you could get it with a satin finish. Idk, how I feel about it having a satin finish, though I guess I'll get to see it in person.

Any thoughts?

Get yourself some mild paste auto wax and a soft cloth.

Work it vigorously over the entire body and voila......instant gloss finish!

So, I did end up purchasing the guitar, and I'm very happy with a majority of it!

There are a few scratches on the body, but it is a 13 year old guitar. The only bad one is this one.

The only problem that I've had is that the higher strings do not want to stay in tune very well, especially if you use the tremolo. I've heard a set of locking tuners can go a long way to help with that and better sustain.

I tried to use a mild wax on the guitar to give it a gloss finish, but there are some pretty rough spots on the finish, looks like that's how it was from the factory, almost like orange peelish. Any other suggestions? Can I wet sand it and then buff after? The finish is nice, I'd just rather have a CAR with a gloss finish than the flat finish. That wouldn't hurt value right? At this point it's just a MIM strat.

Thank you all for helping me with this, and for $250 I think I made out pretty well!

I'd start with a good set-up before replacing any parts (including the tuners). Those adjustments should encompass a careful examination of the bridge and the nut, coupled with whatever minor tweaks the trem claw may require. The vintage-style tremolo is not designed or intended for felonious dive-bombing so if you're attempting anything beyond a very gentle woogle, the guitar will always have tuning-stability issues.
