Hello All !

This is my first time posting and I'm already looking for help!

I've searched, and I "think" I have an idea of what I'm looking at, but I will leave it up to the Pro's.

From what I searched, I think it is a 2000+ MIA Fender Strat?

It is at a local pawn shop and is in decent shape, the only part I did not take a pic of is a part of the guitar has been dropped and there is exposed wood on the top contour part (about 1"x2")

1.) What do you think it is?
2.) What do you think it's worth?
3.) Can I repair the damage?

Thank you all in advance, and I look forward to being a contributing member! 8)

Likely a hundred-dollar Squier with a Fender decal affixed to the headstock.

Yes, too many things about this are wrong for a MIA.

Most 2000+ MIAs would have most of these:

- Walnut colored insert for the truss rod hole, much bigger than this dark plastic one.
- Truss rod hole closer to the nut, on the $@!&# itself.
- Schaller tuners, or F-stamped tuners.
- New style low-friction string tree, except for vintage models.
- Serial number on either front or back of headstock, or for special vintage models on the neck plate.
- 12th fret markers closer together.
- 22 frets, except for special vintage models.
- Micro-tilt, i.e. a fifth hole in the neck plate. Again, except for vintage models.
- Trem cover on the back with offset middle holes.
- Pickups that either have flush pole pieces, or for special vintage models, staggered in a 123412 pattern.

Repairing a gauge on a poly model is not cheap and easy. It has to be stripped and repainted. Which would cost you more than I think this guitar would have been worth if it had been all original.
I'd say $80 is a fair price, if it comes with the strap.

Thank you Arth1 for the explanation. I thought the lack of S/N anywhere on the body/neck was rather odd, and now that you mention the truss rod hole location, it does seem out of place.

On to the next one then, was just hoping that I could find a gem in a rat hole!

The reason I am looking is that my 15 year old is taking a guitar class for school and I remember when I got started and plugging in and making loud noises was what got me hooked!

Now that I'm older, I play mostly acoustic, but would like to get back into electric myself so we have something to do together. I don't want to spend $800-1k on a guitar that will mostly be played by the 15 year old, but I also don't want a really $h!tty guitar that I won't enjoy playing either.

Which has led me to an interesting situation, there are some MIM Strat's in my area for $275/300, but I've also seen that some of the older CV Squiers and Affinity are almost as good as the MIM's?

The thing that got me on this was that it seemed at an untrained glance to be more than it is, and I, personally, like the maple neck better than the rosewood.

I appreciate your help, and look forward to learning more!

Forget the Affinity's, they're an entry-level POS for the most part. Any MIM or CV Squier is several orders of magnitude better in all aspects.

Seconded. A great used condition standard MIM will run you around $300, but is something you can actually play for 10+ years and go on stage with, not worrying about it.

Diminishing returns kick in at that range, and a $1000+ American, while better, isn't going to be three times better. But the step up to a used Mexican or Japanese is like night and day from the lowest-cost Squiers or Chinese made Fenders.

If you can't afford $300+ right now, there are other brands that can get you there. A used Epiphone can be good, and won't generally break the bank. Ibanez RG too, if you like to do metal. For the young one playing, well, schools recommend Yamaha Pacifica for a reason - they're very well built, and don't require a second mortgage. In the sub-$200 range, I'd take one of those over a Squier Affinity any day.
I'd still look at a MIM Fender if I were you, though.
But try them out. If you're not comfortable playing electric yet, bring someone who can help you, pointing out what to look for. The feel is everything for a starter instrument. You have to like it, and want to play it, and not be ashamed of it.

Agreed to all the analysis, but the three above --especially -- just scream from the rafters "not real" to even those not well versed in identifying such things. This guitar does not even have the basics.

Thank you for your input Arth1, again. I agree with all that you've said and I will probably end up with a MIM Strat.

The cost isn't a huge deal, as I have a few higher dollar acoustics, the only reason I'm trying to stay 'budget conscience' is that I have no illusions of grandeur of playing in front of hundreds or thousands people on stage, but I do understand a quality instrument when I play one, and I don't want to feel like I want snap off my fingers/ears while playing it occasionally.

I was also considering a DIY kit that we could build together. I have heard mixed reviews on the kits, and I know that building one wouldn't end up 'saving' any money, it would cost just as much as buying a used MIA once you upgrade to quality components.

Lots of thoughts and ideas, but excited about the journey!

I agree with Arth. This looks like a MIM 60's re-issue Strat. While it's not a MIA one, it's still a good model to get started on and will give you many years of enjoyment.

That volute from the back of the neck to the back of the headstock.
Not a Fender or Squier neck, I reckon.

Sorry I must continue.

Image

Look at the drop off from the fingerboard to the face of the headstock.

Look at those sharp lines.
See how the 'crease' at the headstock face of the drop off isn't parallel to the nut.

Does this explain that wild volute round the back?

Thirded. :P
My favorite guitar is my MIM Telecaster. Solidly made, quality instrument that feels, looks and sounds great. It's my go-to guitar, over my 1980 G&L F-100 or Fender '62-reissue Stratocaster (both made in the US).

Welcome, jrad. Good advice here, and that's how it works here on the Forum.

I agree with The MIM comments. It will be a guitar worth maintaining or modding, and you'll have that Mojo which can't hurt. :D

Cheers!
