ah I see..pretty minor.. good for you! you lucked out a bit.

I was hanging one day in the studio, I must have touched my mic stand (w/SM58)

it slowly succumbed to gravity, and the SM58 hit my (up till that moment) mint Taylor GS Cedar / Mahogany right behind the bridge, and then, skidded down to the floor across the top. ($2k dollar guitar in a knife with against an SM58,, the mic kicked it's $@!)

(AAAAAAAAAAAARG!)

it's pretty ugly, I've mimizied it a bit with Scratch X, if the light hits it just right, it's very obvious (about 6 inch long scratch with an nice "dent" where the mic made contact.

I had some quotes for fixing it, which were in the ball park of absurd price wise.

so I was pissed for a while, but, I had to move on..

I've thought a few times about steaming some of it out, but I figured I'd done enough damage already.

the guitar plays and sounds fantastic, it's like a hideous scar on the forehead of a gorgeous girl..
she's till gorgeous, just has the scar..

Now that's a scratch damn it!

I didn't execute the guilty party, but I put it on parole for a long time, (and put the wind screen -- that is usually always on that mic except for that day and would have surely minimized the damage 10 fold -- back on)

I got a quote from a Taylor authorized service center here in the North East.

the "cheap" fix was $550

the next stop was $900

We said "oh,, well.. hey... thanks" and heaved lunch up on the sidewalk..

900 dollars?? are you the least bit serious?

OUCH!

The secondary damage *might* be field-repairable but that POI ding got right into the wood.

:(

Lololol 900!
People paint whole cars for that money!
All it's really needed to paint a guitar is some skill, spray booth and spray gun...900 wow

Plus sanding paper, masking tape, a dust free room, but most important of all, the correct lacquer(s).

But the above should be fixable. Part of the costs is likely that to get a good result there, the bridge may have to be unglued and reglued.

I'm no pro, but I would add fresh air and a face mask to that list.

Arjay, yea it did break through the finish entirely and split the wood fibers.

I could do a drop and fill, but the area would be darker than the rest, (I guess at least it would be sealed)

WaymoreProta, The issue is Taylor and the process/materials they use during the finishing process. It's a water based urethane that requires (from what I have understood) quite a specialized environment and set of procedures to get it done right. it this was nitro, (like on a J45, or J200) the repair would have been far more down to earth.

you cannot use Lacquer, it will not bind with the rest of the finish.

Drop and Fills in these finishes, are done with (would you believe) varying viscosity of super glue

By spray booth I thought of dust free room for painting and the sand paper and rest of the material is dead cheap, you're paying for skill mostly but seriously 900? I think John Monteleone would charge less to fix some of guitars he made...

Refer back to my Custom Taylor post. Even back in the day, Taylor did not use lacquer, much to my dismay. It could have been passably fixable, but I couldn't find anyone who would touch it. I supposed I could have sent it back for a non-warranty repair estimate, but it had already been 8 months and no telling how much $. It was nothing like your masacre there, or I would have considered it. Just a ding and I eventually wore the hide off that guitar in no time. It's amazing how much little you care after that first one.

Meh wait till you've rushed off stage at 5 minutes to midnight on the 31st of December. Desperate to get off and make room for the people doing the new year celebration thing.
Forgot you're still plugged into your board. As you're falling, holding two guitars make the decision of which to break.

^-- Oh the humanity!!!

and yep taylor's finishes, very hard to work on in some cases, this is one of them.

There is a guy who will seal it for me, and he's very good) but so far he's been reluctant to take it in as he thinks it will look worse when he's done. it's a drag.

Cosmetic blemishes I wouldn't worry about. Just take photos of em and compare over time. Make sure they aren't getting worse.
Bust the neck on that Les Paul 3 times in a month. It's a 72. It looks like it shattered and was glued by a previous owner. I haven't bothered painting it since the last time.

it's not nearly as noticeable as the photos show. I was able to buff out quite a bit of the scar on the top, the only real noticeable part is the big ding where the mic first made contact.

chalked up to sh*t happens... I've pretty much moved on..

that's a shame on your 72 lp, the repairs are usually sound and solid but the simple fact that it's there causes quite the "devalue" on resale
