Well you guys can congratulate me since last night I made a first dent in my new American Special Stratocaster. It's very small but above the middle pickup above the pickguard...
I knew it must happen sooner or later and actually feel relived now.
But it pissed me off, since I did a whole setup, so screwdrivers, pliers, strings springs etc..and have not made a single scratch.
So last night I finished playing and took my Dunlop string cleaner to clean the strings, I dropped the bottle two inches above the guitar and damn sharp edge on the cap of the bottle dinged my perfect candy apple red finish. Irony eh!?
Anyway it's not very visible just a few mm but pissed me off.
I know it's quite normal for instruments to get a little dings a scratches sooner or later, but later would be fine lol

How you guys cope with damages in your instruments?

When it first happens, I feel like this:

But then I get over it and realize that I am the only one that notices it anyway. Yes, it will happen, likely more than once, and the first time seems like the worst. :(

I'd have to see this to advice a bit but, you could get some of this stuff and try to buff it to smooth out the area.

http://www.carid.com/meguiars/scratch-x ... 10307.html

it happens, no matter how careful you are, I try to repair/minimize things but in the end, unless you want to have it professionally repaired, just move on...

I used their products on cars, but there's no need to touch this since it's not a scratch and it's just a tiny dent, not even a crack in finish. So I better leave it alone. Gonna post pics when I get home.

I've had a some luck with putting a damp cloth over the dent and lightly touching it with the tip of a hot iron to swell the wood, but be careful not to soften the finish and watch closely and don't hold the iron to it for too long.

Yeah I'm familiar with that method, but I doubt that steam would go through the uncracked polyurethane finish...
Any luck with that cases?

Ok tried the wet paper towel and iron method, seem to have pulled it out slightly, but didn't want to go any further not turn damage high gloss with steam. It's barely noticeable now. Here's a pic

BUT it made a whole lot more difference on my Crafter red cedar top, where I had a big dent with some cracks in the finish, so steam can get through to the wood. Turned out great, had that dent since 2002. So here it is.

And after the treatment

Back in 1989 when Taylor was hardly a blip, I had just received my top of the line, custom made 956 Jumbo 12 string. Gorgeous! Been waiting 8 months. On the 2nd day I leaned it up against the couch and my sweet little daughter was carrying in a boom box and bang!! Right on the front. I cried. I tried every method known to man, but it was there to stay. I never really got over it.

Sorry to hear about your axe, Waymore.

Crash, bang! I look over to see my Amn Dlx Strat with the head leaning face down on the edge of glass shelving. The stand (which I was about to replace because of small headstock incompatibility) tipped on the rug, and I now have a tiny dent/chip minus some finish on the headstock between the first and second tuning keys! #%^**+. Fortunately, the neck is good, so it could have been worse. Somehow, my long term cheaper guitars escaped this fate. Must be the guitar Gods.

Fortunately, no one else can readily notice, but I know it's there. :x I'm hoping that, if and when I trade it in, it will not be an issue. It's taken a bit of time to accept it; but, now I can prove ownership should it go missing.
FSB
Besides, it plays the blues better now even if I don't.

I feel your pain man I just love.these instruments, and Crafter which is a truly a wonderful guitar I inherited from my uncle who died at age of 45 and he was.a.great jazz guitarist.
I have a 4 year old son and I try to keep em safe from him, but he really likes em and helps me polish em. He's really into music and loves to "play" his Ukulele and mouth harp...but he's really into Motorhead lol

ah I see..pretty minor.. good for you! you lucked out a bit.

I was hanging one day in the studio, I must have touched my mic stand (w/SM58)

it slowly succumbed to gravity, and the SM58 hit my (up till that moment) mint Taylor GS Cedar / Mahogany right behind the bridge, and then, skidded down to the floor across the top. ($2k dollar guitar in a knife with against an SM58,, the mic kicked it's $@!)

(AAAAAAAAAAAARG!)

it's pretty ugly, I've mimizied it a bit with Scratch X, if the light hits it just right, it's very obvious (about 6 inch long scratch with an nice "dent" where the mic made contact.

I had some quotes for fixing it, which were in the ball park of absurd price wise.

so I was pissed for a while, but, I had to move on..

I've thought a few times about steaming some of it out, but I figured I'd done enough damage already.

the guitar plays and sounds fantastic, it's like a hideous scar on the forehead of a gorgeous girl..
she's till gorgeous, just has the scar..

Have some videos of him playing Uke with one hand and blowing mouth harp with other lol
And one where he's head banging to Motorhead in my car, Phil from Motorhead really liked it lol
