I generally post quick recordings of new songs to youtube so I can post for friends to follow. Consistently I am not that happy with the final quality of the youtube posts -- shifted tones, minor buzzes etc. I'm sure it's an artifact of the compression, but how to best process for best youtube sound?

My workflow: Reaper for mix/master to MP3 render -> Windows Movie Maker for putting graphic with music, render for youtube -> upload to youtube, watch it do whatever processing it does.

On more than one occasion, I've listened to my final youtube and was kind of disappointed and went back to my DAW (Reaper) and don't hear the problem in original mix.

Anyway, any thoughts, insight or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!

Sometimes there's only so much you can do.

I always save my original recording in "Best format for playback on the computer" which should be the largest files size/least compressed.

By selecting "render for youtube" you may very well be compressing the file according to the preset, and then YouTube itself does additional compression upon upload (thus compounding the loss of quality).

Just a thought, I don't know what's really going on with your uploads for sure....

Thanks! I'll give this a try! I know I'm always going to suffer some loss going to youtube, but just want to do whatever easy stuff I can do to make it the best I can!

Also, I don't know why I chose to make my informal posts to youtube instead of soundcloud... my kids say I'm behind the curve on this stuff... but so be it. When I put final albums up, I use bandcamp which does a good job of preserving quality for streaming IMO.
