The reason Fender's warranty doesn't follow the item and stays with the initial buyer. Is simply a matter of contracts.
You as a buyer have no contract with Fender. Your contract is with whoever you bought the guitar from. The retailer has a contract with Fender......Purely hypothetical, say FMIC sell 1000 guitars a month. They don't want the possibility of 1000 dissatisfied customers ringing them up at any given moment.

When my Sony Playstation 2 died, they honored the warranty without so much as a sales receipt. And I think there are a 'few thousand' of those out there.

Fender handles it just fine too, in countries where legal warranties follow the merchandise. You don't have to go further than Quebec.
Normally, outside the US, warranties are handled by the point-of-sales handling the customer contact, acting as a go-between. The contract between the manufacturer and seller can of course include remuneration for this.
That they don't in the US is simply because they can get away with it. Caveat emptor.

As the consumer economy gets more globalized and online sales take over for brick-and-mortar, this is slowly changing, and more and more US companies offer warranties at similar terms as given abroad. One day, I'm sure Fender will follow suit too, or people will just order their Fender guitars from elsewhere and get better warranties.

Well yeah but that's a Japanese company. And as we well know, from looking at Fender/Gibsons patent wars with the Japanese guitar building factories. Japanese law doesn't follow western law too closely.

I had similar with my PS2 too.
As I remember, when I first got the thing, setting it up. Registration with the PSN was a part of set up. And that the models serial was included in that. Making customer verification very easy for them. They are a different sort of company, specialising in computer data. Your records will no doubt be available to them at will. And lots of other people after that hack a couple of years back
It's different for a plank of wood.

I wouldn't like it, but it wouldn't take much to smooth out the edge on it.
