What are the advantages and disadvantages of the two?

It's easier to tell where the switch is set with a Push-pull pot, especially in low light situation.

Thanks!
Any concerns about durability?

I think which type you use might depend on the function of the pot. I have both. My JP15 has a push push boost that I use for solo's. It's much quicker to operate in my opinion. If it was push pull, I probably would use a floor boost pedal.

I plan to use a pair (tones) for splitting an asymetrical humbucker to the 4 basic modes. (in a HSS strat). I'd chose the push-push but my local luthier was concerned they might break easier, so I started asking through the forums...

For coil splitting, speed isn't a concern, normally. But if you bought a good quality pot from a major manufacturer, then I wouldn't worry about durability.

Thank you all!
I'm going for the push-pushs. Any recommendations on maker/supplier?

Cheers!

Alpha and CTS both make a quality pot.
They are both available at Stewart MacDonald.

I'd add Bourns to the "quality pots" list.

But, as you've found out, it seems impossible to find a push-push pot from any of those brands.
Unless you're more skillful in googling than me, your choices are either a non-brand pot & take the possibly increased risk of breaking, or a push-pull with a quality brand.

WD Music, Allparts, Axetec, Guitarfetish and probably a lot more sell push-push pots, no brand announced.

For coil splitting, you're probably better off to go with a CTS or Alpha push pull. The push push volume / boost that's in my MM JP15 feels like a solid pot. But I have no idea what brand they use.
