A whiter shade of Purple I fear.
There is no substitute for the original.

It's a weird induction for Deep Purple - basically the Mk. II lineup, the Mk. III lineup, plus the Mk. I singer but not bassist.

It's a shame they couldn't bury the hatchet long enough to just play 1 tune at the ceremony. Heart set that precedent a few years ago - they did one song with the classic lineup (Barracuda), then moved on to their current lineup (plus some "special guests" like Chris Cornell) for any other song they did.

+1 John.

Great solution. However, I think you hit the nail on the head about not burying the hatchet. It seems the cut is too deep for any solution.

KISS’ Paul Stanley Explains Why Classic Lineup Didn’t Perform at Rock Hall of Fame Induction

“That lineup has not been together for 14 years, and physically, perhaps, wouldn’t have looked that great, and musically, undoubtedly, probably, would have sounded a bit suspect,” Stanley continues. “So, to have people watch it on television and identify that as KISS because there’s four guys in makeup would not send a great signal to the people who are not following the band in its current permutation, or what it is today.”

He kind of has a point.

Interestingly, I haven't paid attention to KISS for the same length of time. Hmm...

longer for me.
But seriously, the point is - even if you did get that old classic lineup back together, there's a good chance it would be a major disappointment. When Pink Floyd was inducted in 1996, could you imagine if they took the stage with Syd?

I don't like the previously discussed "one and done" solution at all. The fact is that the current line-up of Deep Purple makes a living off the Blackmore-era Purple. If it is a Blackmore song, then Blackmore should play it. Period. If you want Morse to play, then let him play Morse-era Purple. I find this all VERY disappointing as I am a big Blackmore fan. I was lucky enough to see them when they reformed on the Perfect Strangers tour. They were soooooooooo good ... all of them. And this is likely the last chance EVER to see them together. And I am so ridiculously disappointed it won't happen, and that Blackmore will not even be there...

As for the Kiss thing, I am not so accepting of them not playing at their induction. Paul and Gene didn't want Ace to play because they think he is fat, and they didn't want Peter to play because they think he can't play any more. Just Gene and Paul wanting the "power position" and being the usual a-holes that they are...

I don't know guys, I'm a huge Blackmorefan too, but I wouldn't sacrifacie the band's dignity for the sake of a show of this inadecuate institution!!! Who the F,,, are these R'nR HoF stupidos? Why don't they induct Blackmore's Night? ... since Steve Morse playing in Deep Purple doesn't match their criteria...?! I'm a huge Blackmore fan, but I mean, who is who for the last 22 years? Аnd why would an vaugly known institution tell artists what, how and when to do! F*** O** R'nR HoF! Do you actually ever listen to (the) music?

With Ritchie Blackmore, that is just not an issue. He's still got chops in spades:

But does he have the brains? "Carry On Jon" was a pathetic disapointment... (I wouldn't listen to the vocal songs of his mother-in-law-managed project)

Fair enough ... but we as fans have to expect that the material is going to fall off in quality as the decades pass. The last Rainbow album was "Stranger In All Of Us" (1995) which was a pretty good album. Then by going in a whole new direction, he left his Rainbow and Purple legacies pretty much wholly intact; there is something to be said for that. "Blackmore's Night" is not my cup of tea at all. But -- then again -- he is not trying to conjure it into a watered-down Rainbow or Deep Purple. As opposed to staying with "the band name everyone knows" and then releasing questionable albums and performing questionable live shows ... like many artists late in the career do (Judas Priest, Scorpions, Queensryche, et al). Off the top of my head, I think the only band to make consistently good entire albums (not just a song here and there) and solid live shows decade over decade is without question Rush (you can make a good argument for others, though ... Iron Maiden, Metallica, Ozzy, et al). Hence -- in the end -- I don't expect all these older acts to play live and release albums like they did in their hey day -- I am perfectly happy when I recognize them aesthetically and musically as a solid representation of what "used to be". Anything more than that is gravy.

Agreed! Seems like there is some sort of "drama" every time any more. And, I'm sorry, but the name is Rock & Roll Hall of Fame...once they started letting anyone from any music genera in---it became nothing more than a joke to me, and a lot less honorable to the genera it is named after.

I'm surprised Kanye West isn't crying, *ithing, and moaning every year he doesn't hear Beyoncé's name on the list as potential nominee.

So does Steve Howe (from Yes). But that doesn't mean he would do a good job of playing "Trevor Rabin era" Yes.

This whole Hall of Fame thing is ridiculous for so many reasons. The artists that are in the hall, compared to ones that aren't? Stupid. How is it that Deep Purple is not in already? Really? Seems to me they should have been an immediate "first in" just based on the first 30 seconds of Smoke on the Water alone! That single riff was played by every kid who ever picked up a guitar and wanted to move on to rock glory!

And these old bands that can't get along for one or two songs? If you want to accept the award than you should include the original members, not saying that ALL members shouldn't be included but your starting point should be the originals that were there when "IT" happened. Playing Smoke on the Water while Blackmore sits in the audience? Dumb!

Yes, KISS is my favorite band, so many of you will automatically discount my opinion because you think they're a joke. I didn't like the way they handled their induction either. Just be adults for crap's sake!
