As you may know, Deep Purple is being inducted into the Rock and Roll HoF. However, Ritchie Blackmore will not be there. Why? Evidently, Ian Gillian and Ian Paice are so upset that Steve Morse (who has been playing as Blackmore's replacement for decades) and Don Airey (who replaced Jon Lord long ago) are not part of the induction that they think the only fair thing to do is ONLY allow the current version of Deep Purple play the music -- which includes Morse, Airey, and ironically also Gillan and Paice.

So, let's review ... Ritchie Blackmore is being inducted into the RRHoF and is not being allowed to play?? The "plan" was to play Space Trucking and Smoke On The Water with Ritchie Blackmore in the audience??? I can see why Blackmore is upset and not going. As a fan, it is a travesty. I love Morse (seen him live many times solo and with the Dregs) ... but Blackmore is a guitar god that should be allowed to rip up DP one last time.

Well Jon Lord passed away some four years ago so his absence is understandable but consigning Ritchie Blackmore to the sidelines like some crazy aunt locked in the family basement breaches the wall between bad manners and blasphemy!

WTF?????

This is so awful, it's beyond words. I agree with Arjay, where the only thing I can come up with too is "WTF ???"

I remember the farce a few years ago with Creedence, where John Fogarty and the guys from CCR came together at the podium and accepted their awards. But when it was time to play "Proud Mary" or whatever on stage, it was just John Fogarty but yet with members of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band?!?

I wish rock stars of all generations would get along and put their differences aside just for one night!

There's several groups or individuals from groups that have refused to "play nice" out of some misplaced sense of pride or just plain stubbornness.
If a person has a legitimate beef (assault, etc) or a legitimate health issue, that's one thing...but guys like Fogarty, Axl Rose and Gene Simmons all solidify what we suspected in the first place--that they're self-important jackwagons...I might continue to like their music, but their actions lessen my overall enjoyment of it.

Plus, all personal respect goes out the window.

The Stones (obviously not paragons of humility) got it right when they were inducted--they allowed Mick Taylor onstage to accept the award, and specifically mentioned Brian Jones and Ian Stewart in their speech.

The RRHoF is a tourist attraction only.

Even for this year's inductions, Chicago will perform without Peter Cetera because they could not work it out, and (I believe) it is still in question whether Cheap Trick will allow Bun E, Carlos back on drums for the night. And don't forget Van Halen where Eddie (reasonably) did not attend because he was in rehab, Alex did not attend because he can't be 50 feet away from Eddie, and David Lee Roth cited the reason for him not attending was that he "was not allowed to play 'Jump' at the ceremony" which no one corroborated. Oh .. and how about Kiss where they were all there and no one performed?

Steven Morse is a great player. No doubt about it. But he wasn't around and didn't bring DP to greatness back when. And he's great enough that I'm quite sure he would gladly step to the back to let the dark knight play a song and receive his well deserved accolades.

What Gillan and Paice seem to forget is that while they are rock heroes, Ritchie Blackmore is a rock god. He is the one who should be stating who should play. For the years they are honored for, DP would have been nothing without Blackmore/Lord. Gillan and Paice owe their careers to these two guys, so no matter how much bad blood there is, or how much of a dick Blackmore has been (or still can be), he's still Rock God. Excluding him this way will only hurt your own reputation, not his.

It's as churlish as if Pink Floyd denied Roger Waters, or Black Sabbath wouldn't want Ozzy in because Dio didn't get a prize...

Blackmore was a huge influence for me as a kid.

Anyway,

Massive Ego's that can never be fed aside,, the RRHOF lost all relevance a long time ago...

Ritchie Blackmore is the reason I loved Deep Purple back in the day.
His absence is the reason I don't really pay them much attention anymore.
Lord's B3 work was great, Gillan's singing was great, Glover's bass lines were really good, Paice's drumming was awesome but it was Blackmore's magic that drew me in and kept me coming back for more.

Just to put a little perspective on it ... I suppose it's possible that the reason many of us here feel the way we do about Ritchie might have something to do with this being a Fender Forum and the fact the majority of us are guitar players or at least guitar enthusiasts. I have often noticed that friends who are not guitar players think of music and artists differently than I do, sometimes to an extreme degree. I think it is entirely possible there are people out there who will not see this development as the shameful injustice that we do.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I used to listen to Black Sabbath through 4 channel headphones, and now on HD DVD. Without carrying on about how I look at awards, and how they are what they are, I have one word to say about the Ritchie Blackmore situation, and other similar events where all are not included as earlier described.
