That thing is ridiculous. It would take you the whole gig just to tune it. :P I've actually played on an 8 string bass and those were pretty cool. It was a Rickenbacker 4008 and an old Ibanez model, maybe a Musician.

I can't play a bass (perhaps an upright, badly), but I love the warm sound of the jazz bass. The p-bass seems to be brighter on the treble side and compete a bit more with the guitar at times. Presumably the band will have a guitar or two to do that, while the guitars can't do what a bass can. So my preference from playing guitar with someone is that they use a jazz bass or other warm and deep bass.
Could be my imagination, of course.
