I've heard that the lp is heavy and the strat isn't but how much do they weight?

Depending on the wood types used to construct the strat body and neck the weight of a strat varies.

Gibson and Epiphone Les Pauls also vary over a substantial weight range depending on their construction materials, and if they are weight managed (extra internal cavity routing).

Overall a Les Paul is noticably heavier than even a dense Northern Ash constructed Strat w/ Maple Neck.

There are semi-hollow body Les Paul models with sound holes that weight several pounds lighter than a solid body weight relieved Les Paul. I have a Les Paul Florentine that is nearly 1/3 lighter (i.e. several pounds) than the weight of either of my Les Paul Custom Pros.

Every guitar weighs a bit differently than the next individual guitar.

Take a look at Sweetwater.com. Their guitars are presented in a comparitive photo gallery where you can view up to four identical units of the same model and finish guitar, each with the weight and serial number. Often the same model guitar will differ in weight from the next unit by far more than a few ounces.

As a general rule, Les Pauls will weigh more than Strats but remember a les Paul is made of Mahogany with a 1/4 inch maple cap, that's a lot more wood than a Strat an the older and VOS Les Pauls -(the real ones not the Epiphones) have a much thicker neck which also adds to the weight of a guitar So a Les Paul (even some weight- relieved ) will way more than your typical Alder American Stratocaster. The last poster is absolutely correct on checking with Sweetwater some guitars will vary by ounces and I have seen some weigh a couple pounds heavier than others but they are your best reference point. Most guitar stores don't even carry scales so Sweetwater is your best bet for an exact weight. They are also a very well informed bunch of folks who know alot about guitars amps and pedals.

I've picked up Strats that were outrageously cumbersome and Les Pauls that were very light and comfortable...depends on the individual guitar, due to the wood (type of wood, how "dry" it was when the building of it started, etc), the construction (is the body chambered?), and even the hardware (type of tremolo, etc).

You certainly have an interesting way of researching which guitar you want to buy.

my strats weigh I guess around 7lbs. (sort of like my SGs.)

I have an LP that's well over 11, and another that's just under 10.

for 20+ years I gigged with an Ibanez MC400 (1979), that beast weighed over 14lbs.......

I wrote this many moons ago:

As a summary: a Strat weighs anything from a little under 7lbs to a little over 10lbs.

And then, of course, there are the Light Ash Strats and the Heavy Metal Strats...

AFAIK, the variations in Gibsons are about similar.

Right now, I'm more worried about the weight of the fonts here, making it really hard to read anything.

Given that our esteemed web admin has made himself unreachable through messages, does anyone have a shortcut to get a hold of him?

The Forum's legibility degraded this past weekend with this ridiculous text shift to bold.

A completely useless and unnecessary change.

I noticed on Sunday and was waiting to see if anyone else noticed (the font issue). You have to guess based on the timing, it might have been following an update to the forum.

LOL! I had a similar reaction, arth1. My first thought was why is everybody screaming.

As for weights, it depends on several factors but here are some figures from my family past and present:
American Deluxe (alder body, maple neck) = 8.0 lbs
American Standard FSR (ash body, rosewood FB) = 7.8 lbs
Standard (alder body, maple neck) = 8.2 lbs
Standard (alder body, rosewood FB) = 7.8 lbs
PRS SE Custom 24 (maple top, mahogany neck, rosewood FB) = 7.4 lbs

As for heavy Strats, I believe Arjay has one close to 14 lbs. I could be mistaken but that number seems to ring some bells in the windmills of my mind.

Cheers!
BM

Here are a few more:

8.6 Lbs - Les Paul Custom Pro (Ebony)
8.8 Lbs - Les Paul Custom Pro (Alpine White)
8.6 Lbs - Les Paul PlusTop Pro (Heritage Cherry Sunburst)
6.8 Lbs - Les Paul Florentine Pro (Wine Red, Semi-Hollow)

7.8 Lbs - Custom Strat (Northern Ash, Maple Neck, Cherry Sunburst)

[Note: As a result of the Forums' change to an all bold font, the bold codes do not result in any additional embolding emphasis appearing in posts! The bold code pairs are encasing the words: "Les Paul" and "Strat" in this sentence and the post above without any visible effect! The Forum Moderator needs to revert the Forums' display font back to normal!]

Addendum: Good to see the font bolding problem was corrected!

This is very light. 2nd lightest guitar I have. Lightest is a Mosrite

Image

This is the 2nd heaviest guitar I have. The heaviest being a Baja Tele.

Image

That's a '72 Custom. A real Norlin boat anchor.

Guitar weights are so variable, I'd forget my preconceptions about them. My Strats vary in weight. One closer to the Custom LP. One closer to the LP Standard and one inbetween somewhere.

Having your Guitars and Amps in the Kitchen, adds a new meaning to "Cookin'"!

I like the sound in my kitchen. The tiles bring out the reverb
