I have been jonesing for a no-frills P-90 based guitar for a while, for jazzy blues.
For a while, I was more than a little GASsing for a Reverend Sensei:
Image
I love the retro look, and it has the features I want, including double-cut, P90s, a tune-o-matic and relatively straight string stretch, and not a lot of extra frills except a bass roll-off circuit.
And have I mentioned that I love the retro look?

However, Yamaha has now come out with a series that's clearly at least "inspired by" the Reverend Sensei. Not only the looks, but also a bass roll-off circuit. Even the name, "Revstar". Seeing it, the GAS got the better of me. I instantly fell in lust.

Unless FedEx manages to crush it, I am now the proud owner of a clone of a modernist retro-styled P90-based guitar.
Yes, I know, I say "try before buy", but I am willing to risk this one. GAS made me.

(yes, it's the actual guitar - Sweetwater takes pictures of the individual guitars)

That is quite beautiful. Definitely classy looking.

Reverend guitars, know much about them Arth1?
The shop by me had one in, a Strat inspired thing with a P90 and two regular singlecoils.
I have to say, it played really well.

Nothing I will be ashamed of taking on stage, for sure.

Not a lot, I have to admit. I like the simple look of many of them. They're an American company, with production in Korea, and seem to focus more on players than someone wanting their first guitar. They're mostly in the mid-range price segment, competing with MIM Fenders, Epiphone, ESP LTD, PRS SE and such.
From what I've been told, they're good guitars, and the couple of used ones I've tried at GC did have a good feel to them. They were just overpriced for heavily used, but that's GC for you.

For Yamaha, up until now, Yamaha hasn't made much effort on capturing the electric market. They've had the Pacifica, and... that's about it? But they're definitely a company that makes instruments that are meant to be used, with tonnes of experience behind their products. So it will be interesting to see how the Revstar series catches on. I guess I'm an early adopter, and will find out the hard way. If it really plays as good as it looks, they may capture some market share. The prices are certainly not frightening.

Looks very nice -- lots of cool binding going on.

Is that Yamaha made in Japan? Also, was price the main reason of going to the Yamaha?

Congrats!
I have to admit there have been a few times when GAS attacked me from a distance and I became a temporary slave to a tracking number. In my experience it's been a crap-shoot. I've been disappointed at least as often as I have been pleased. Two Gibson products left me with a case of dry-mouth. A lot of salivating beforehand and no quenching of the thirst upon arrival. I now try to limit online purchasing to items rare enough I cannot find access to them locally. Seems like that may have been your case as well. All that said, I hope you discover a real gem in that box!

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Made in Indonesia.

Price wise, the street price of the two are in the same ballpark, so price wasn't the concern. Listening to samples, the Yamaha's P-90 clones seemed to have more of the vintage sound than the Reverend ones, and I have to admit that I like the looks too.

Oh, yes, definitely a gamble. But to quote Lemmy, don't forget the joker!

I've been pleasantly surprised only once before with an online purchase - an SG that turned out to be a heck of a lot better than what I thought it would be. As we well know, guitars have individual variations, so perhaps you get a great one, and perhaps you get the dregs, even if both are the same model. And I've tasted enough sour online grapes to certainly prefer brick and mortar stores. But no rules without exceptions, eh - as you say, I can't find them at local stores yet, so let the dice roll...

I'll let you guys know how it plays. With just a boost going into a clean tube amp, it hopefully should break up nicely and give me that old school sound I've been craving lately.

Congratulation's Art ! My Yamaha classical guitar was excellent, Yamaha does make good gear. I like the looks of the Reverend guitars and have only heard good things about them. Pics please when you can :D

Nice grab, bro'.

Definitely a looker. It was once pointed out to me that Yamaha makes a slew of quality items. Motorcycles, Outboards and watercraft, audio equipment, and musical instruments. All seem to fall into that category. So based on that, the odds are in your favour. :D
Do you know how much that beauty weighs?

Another lonesome guitar gets a good home.

Thanks! Feeling slightly guilty for falling for a GAS attack, it's nice that people here understand :)

Agreed, except for motorcycles. Back in my air force days, I rode a 125cc Yamaha, and it was not what I'd call a quality instrument. Not very melodic either. Named Moby Blue after she started puffing clouds from her engine every time she was cold started. It was what I could afford at $11 per day.
I hear their big touring bikes are nice, though. :)

And their cheap PSR keyboards aren't all that great, but it wouldn't be fair to expect Nord or Jupiter quality sound from a $100 keyboard either. For the price, it's hard to fault them.

A little over 8 lbs, I think. Not surprising, being mahogany.

Their lower price models are made of nato wood, which supposedly is lighter.

Love the looks of this one--and with P-90's planted on a slab of mahogany, it has to sound good. Congratulations, and Happy New Guitar Day!

Yamaha's acoustic offerings are excellent--and the early models are beginning to command some money in the vintage market. If I were in the market for an acoustic, they would definitely be in the running.

In the mid-00's (the aughts?), Yamaha made some very distinctive, well-constructed hollow- and semihollow-archtop guitars that were reminiscent of Gretsch (and to a smaller degree, Gibsons)...thise were very, very nice electrics that never seemed to catch on for some reason.

I've been following Reverend's various creations since their early days...I was especially enamored with their early offering, the "Spy" model...Formica covered body with Lipstick pickups? Very cool.
http://www.revfan.com/Reverend-SPY.html

Searching through that link (a fan website) shows their early (USA-made) guitars...

Since they've move production overseas, they've steadily gotten more affordable, and (thankfully) maintained quality.
There was a local mom-and-pop shop that was a licenced dealer, and I was massively impressed by their overall quality, style and sound. There was a Flying V-inspired Ron Ashdown model, loaded with a trio of P90's, that really rocked the house, as well as the model that inspired the Yamaha that Arth1 just purchased.

Nice looking guitars Arth, also remember they had an SG model besides the Pacifica model you mentioned. In late 70's early 80's was more like a double cutaway LP, if memory serves, than a typical SG a friend of mine had, felt nice anytime I had a go on it. Anything else they produced went under the radar, barr their acoustics, hope it's a bonder.
