I don't know ... what do you think of a Fender Telecaster Thinline (w/ single coil pickups) or a Gibson Les Paul Trad Pro?

You'd have to play each of them, and decide which works best for your needs. I can't choose the right underwear for you, because we don't have the same butt.

It goes back to a personal preference--whether the name on the headstock matters as much as playability and tone.

I have possession of a friend's Epiphone Ultra Les Paul Peanut Butter Popcorn Fart Billy Bob Joe Ed James Mixtape MMXLVII Zippadeedoodah* (his young stepsons are somewhat destructive, and he asked me to keep his guitar and amp head for safekeeping). I have these impressions of the instrument:

The guitar plays and sounds great. Very lightweight and well-balanced; nice neck--neither too fat or skinny; rich, full tone; beautiful woodgrain showing through the cherry sunburst finish; the gold hardware looks classy...however...

I don't know what kind of finish was put on the body, but the wood feels somewhat "plastic-y." The light weight of the chambered body adds to this sensation, since it makes the guitar feel even more like plastic.

It wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me (if I were to get a Les Paul), but it is something to take note of.

*(Note sarcasm font making fun of the ridiculous additional names and quantifiers attached to various models...I realize they have to do this to differentiate between the various styles of Les Pauls, Telecasters, etc., but you can't just say, "I play a Strat," anymore...because there's no less than a dozen different Strats on the market! [/rant]

I haven't played either one, but the ultra 3 does intrigue me. I know the epi's are decent guitars, and I did get a chance to play the new nighthawk recently-a pretty decent guitar.

as far as the ultra, I do like the acoustic pickup, and the built in tuner-nice touches. either way, I think they are probably nice guitars

My opinion only -- the ultra iii is a bit lighter, somewhat lower output than the LP Studio. On the other hand, better construction (yes, I have one of each) and more versatile. I like the clean (I typically use either a Fender Super 210 or Champ SCXD) sound of the ultra iii better. If I had to sell one right now, the LP would be the one without any second thoughts.

But ... I play very mellow stuff at very low volumes ... so your experience may be different.
