Hi everyone, i'm sure there is answer to this already posted but I couldn't find it. How do I remove the piece of the strap-lock left behind when the ball breaks off on a AD Strat ( Schaller ones i think). I will post photos if necessary.

I'm not sure I understand your problem correctly.
There is a nut just below the 'ball'. Just rotate this until the strap lock assembly comes apart.

Being that the assembly consists of simply a washer, a nut and the strap lock (at least on my AmDlx Tele), there appears to be some complication in your situation I am not aware of.

Is it possible you are asking how to remove the strap lock (with a broken 'ball') from the strap holder on the guitar?
A much trickier proposition! You will need some way to grab the remains of the post the 'ball' was attached to. If anything protrudes, I guess I'd try to use needle-nosed pliers. If not, I would be looking at attaching something to the post carefully with superglue. This is because I am not handy enough to attempt something like drilling etc. There are however, people on these forums who are that handy, and they may chime in.
If I couldn't remove it easily, I would take it to someone who could (because I love my Fenders!) A stuck strap lock isn't the end of the world.

I wondered the same thing!
Anything and everything is possible, but I've never even thought about that happening!

Oh man!

If it broke . . . .like mine did. Write the manufacturer! Schaller will send you another one! They have stellar customer service! A placed a post about this a few years ago. Real good people there!

Hope that helps!

Its not my instrument, I didn't break it, but the owner told me he was just removing the strap and the ball came off. This condition is not unheard off, I'm sure I read about the fix somewhere but I just can't find it. Because it is on the butt end (the end that occasionally gets stripped or broken off of regular strap buttons) its probably due to the guitar sitting on the ball when its leaned against something (like the amp).

I tried needle nose plyers but the spring is so tight that I can't get a grip, I will check with Schaller, maybe they have a fix,
thanks for the advice.

I take it the issue here is getting the strap lock off of the button. You might try a sharp, narrow, pointed knife. Try to slide it into the locked slider pocket thingie and see if you can't work the spring loaded pin up and out of the button long enough to slide it off. If you have a spare strap-lock handy you can examine it to see how it works and then my description might make some sense to you.

Failing that, it might be possible to solder a short length of braided wire onto the nub left where the ball broke off and maybe pull with that.

If neither of those ideas work it might be time to break out the heavier tools and just cut right through the lock to remove it from the button. A Dremel with a grinding wheel and a delicate but steady and deliberate hand should be able to cut through without damaging the guitar. You would want to wear eye protection for that job. Safety glasses as a minimum. A full face shield would be better. A hot spark or a tiny shard of broken grinding disc flying into your eye prolly isn't the best thing.

I tried the blade thing, maybe the blade and the needle nose together. I was hoping to find some magic insta fix trickery before really fighting with it, lol
Thanks :)

Hi Eroot64 - I have the same locks and I'm trying to understand the problem. You mentioned "ball" and "spring" which leads me to believe the problem is in the attachment to the strap. Then you mentioned he broke off the piece that resembles a regular button. If it's the latter, then that's more of a problem especially if there's not enough to grab with a needle nose. It would need to be drilled out, I think (yikes). Obviously, if it's the former, that's a $15 fix.

OK - Sorry, I read the other comments and better understand the situation, I think. It's all attached to the guitar which doesn't sound quite as bad, but still a pickle. The needle nose would have been my first and last try. :?: :?

Hi, Eroot64. I'm not sure how difficult your problem is, and the previous answers may have done the trick. If not maybe this applies. Hopefully, your solution is less drastic.

Depending on how deep and how close to the body the threaded part remaining is, the following is a difficult if not impossible method; but, only you or a true handyman, preferably with experience, will be able to tell.

I would only try this common practice after all other less evasive options have failed. You need to scrape (score), cut, or tap a slight groove just deep and wide enough to insert your smallest and adequate choice of flathead screwdriver so that you can back out the threaded part. Some metals are harder and more difficult to achieve this; however, as a last chance it may be worth a try. (Using some lubricant prior to turning the broken screw will help). This grooving method does not fit every situation , however . . . so I would not recommend it unless you feel it is workable and you are proficient. Tip: Use a good amount of masking tape and/or other suitable material to protect your guitar's finish so that only the work area is accessible.

Another, less advisable method, is to drill, starting with a very small bit. Sometimes, and I repeat sometimes, a little drilling is all that's needed. Just enough to insert a small metal probe that you can jam into the partially bored out lubricated screw stem. The idea is (if your lucky and the threads are moveable) you can get a grip from the inside of the screw stem and back it out. I had a project recently where this worked.

Worse scenario, wood filler to patch the hole left behind. If wood filler is used, try to install a lock that will bite into the repaired hole including both the filled and original body.

The methods above are used successfully for other broken screws; but, I take no responsibility in your case . . . only to give you some option.

Best of luck.

FSB
