A few weeks ago I ran into a pretty cool Ibanez AH-10 and I've been negotiating with the seller for nearly two weeks. We finally agreed on a price and I went home with a pretty sweet fairly rare mid 80's Ibanez.

She's far from perfect but has potential.

And now the booboos.

I'm gonna fix it up and possibly sell it. Or keep it, it's a pretty cool axe!

Allan Holdsworth is a favorite guitarist, especially his work with Tony Williams. Congrats, cool find 8)

Yeah the specs are pretty cool. It's basically a modified roadstar, It has heavy duty Dunlop 6100 fret wire which explains why the frets still look great even though the pick guard suggests this guitar was really played, "bathtub tone chamber" which basically makes this guitar a semi-hollow (not to mention lots of room for pickup configurations), custom AH designed pickup, the neck is 17 radius which is pretty flat, and the bridge has an aluminum block and closer string spacing which does some sort of black magic. Also the strap button is on the center of the neck plate which I guess makes it easier to play as a lefty, and ebony fretboard which is always cool.

All in all its a pretty sweet guitar and at $300, a very fair deal. There's one selling on reverb in similar condition for $1250. Some on eBay listed as high as $2500!

Happy NGD!

I didn't even know these guitars existed until your (other) NGD thread mentioned it. Very cool guitar and some interesting features.

Personally, I wouldn't restore the guitar, outside of making it playable/mechanically sound. People are paying big bucks for relic'd guitars, you might be able to promote this as an actual relic...of course, many/most collectors are looking for pristine instruments, but that doesn't mean a used (read: well-played) rare instrument has no value.

I seem to recall Holdsworth had/has a Carvin signature model, too...I saw one of these at a guitar shop in Fort Worth--very unique set of features on it, too.

Enjoy your new baby!

Thanks man!

Yesterday I started to clean it up and it's starting to look really nice to the point where the paint chips don't bother me much. Polished the frets and oiled that nice ebony fretboard and sprayed some cleaner and wiped her down and that finish was starting to come back to life.

Before that I plugged her in with the really old strings it had and it sounded well. The pots are good and the guitar jack is good too. After that I removed the pick guard to see if that pickup is the original and as soon as I started to removed the screws I realized I was the first one to ever remove that pick guard. Pretty cool stuff under there.

"Bathtub" routing. No wonder this guitar is so light!

His signature on the back of the pickup.

And some comparison. 19 and 18 frets are unpolished, 18-22 after a quick polish. I'm gonna work on them some more and make them really shiny.

Amazing what some GHS Gorgomyte, some Dunlop lemon oil, Dunlop guitar polish, and about 4 hours of elbow grease can do! The action is a bit high for my taste, and the intonation is a bit off on some strings, but she does play great! I was noodling it last night unplugged for about an hour and the wife asked me "you are selling that guitar, right?" I told her "well it needs more work so I can ask the money I want for it. And the. I have to find that special buyer". She shook her head fully knowing I'm full of $hit.

That's a great score for $300. I had bought a Roadstar II way back in 1984 when I was stationed in Alameida, Ca. and that was a great sounding axe. I ended up selling a year later and regret it to this day. Those mid 80's Ibanez's were some great sounding guitars IMO.

Well I guess I'm keeping it because someone offered $800 for it and I turned it down.
