Agreed. The "dumb" comment was mine. I just did not want it to be even vaguely inferred that my "opinion" should be considered to have more weight than any other ... or something like that (I am not sure I said that right)...

It is funny. I have never considered a normal sunburst to be a "faux aging " look. That is an interesting observation.

Totally agree. How a guitar looks has a lot to with the emotional connection a guitarist has with it. Let's face it ... electric guitars are "cool", just like motorcycles, sunglasses, and (as you inferred) Levi 501s. Yes, they perform an important function. But how they look is a key element to their existence.

I don't think image is important as it is shallow. One man's love is another man's worse choice, never worry about what someone else might think about how you look with a certain guitar, Play what you love and love what you play and don't even consider anyone else's opinion on what might "look good" to someone else. Find something that you absolutely Love and have fun and if your band or someone else doesn't like it, too bad- this is your guitar. YOU Chose and get what you Love not what someone else thinks is best. Your opinion is the only one that matters. The only one you need to impress is yourself.

But how it looks to me is important. You can call it shallow all you like, but unless I have something that pleases me also in a visual aesthetic way, I'm just not going to perform well. And to a lesser degree it also influences how the interaction between performer and audience works. A symphony orchestra doesn't perform in dirty jeans and wifebeaters, because how they look is part of the experience.
As long as there is limelight or cameras, looks will matter, also to others.

I'm not the least bit ashamed of saying that looks is a big factor when I buy guitars. That doesn't mean I can't also find a guitar that sounds very good and plays well. There are so many guitars to choose from that it's easy enough to find ones that please both the ear, hand and eyes.

+1
I heard a story about Bobby Darin, which may or may not be true:
In the late 60's, he took off his toupee, grew what was left of his hair long(er) and dressed kinda hippy-ish for a while.
When he performed, he played the exact same set(s) as before, but people said he just "wasn't the same, not as good" as before.
His then-wife, the actress Sandra Dee, told him, "People listen with their eyes just as much as with their ears."
He cut his hair, put on the toupee and slapped on a suit and tie...and he was suddenly "good" again.

Likewise, if an instrument looks the part, it will make the experience of playing it better...and the audience will respond in kind.

Which is why Fender guitars such as Mustangs, Jazzmasters and Jaguars are usually seen in the hands of (1) surf aficionados, (2) indie/alt/punk bands such as Sonic Youth or Dinosaurs Jr or Lady Lamb the Beekeeper or (3) grunge players.

Those guitars can just as easily be used for blues, country or jazz (and I've seen/heard players use them thus), but their reputation has been cemented to fit within the categories listed above.

When it comes down to it, we associate certain colors or finishes with certain artists, which colors our opinion of WHAT they're playing (musically) with what INSTRUMENT they're playing.

A white Les Paul makes me think "Randy Rhodes." A battered sunburst Strat with a rosewood fretboard makes me think "SRV" or "Rory Gallagher." A battered Olympic White Strat with a big headstock makes me think "Yngwie". A battered natural-finish Strat with a big headstock makes me think "Bonnie Raitt." Polka-dot Strat? "Buddy Guy."

I could pick up any of those instruments, and play what I normally play (and sound just like myself), but the (knowledgeable) audience (read: musicians or fans of those musicians) will associate and relate my performance to those iconic individuals (for better or for worse, positively or negatively).

Yes, the appearance of the instrument affects the audience...and it's wrong to think it won't affect the player as well.

There's no "wrong" thinking there's only your opinion. It is you performance and not the color your audience will remember and if you think the color has any affect on the audience I couldn't disagree with you more. That's my opinion and I'm happy with it. I don't think the color has anything to do with the audience and comparing an orchestra to a gig is absolutely ridiculous. You are so hung up on color it's getting hysterical

Obviously I'm not, because I own a vintage G&L and a Telecaster with one of my least favorite finishes (for a Fender-style guitar), the Sunburst.

I don't hate sunbursts, it's just overdone and too common.

If the only options were red LP studio, white LP studio, or red strat, I would go with the red LP:

I'm just not a big fan of red strats, or white guitars in general.

+1 Absolutely!!! The tools used in any artistic activity can be very important to the artist since art in itself is all about aesthetics!

I have to agree with the appearance comments, just the same as I have an image at work. I have a certain haircut, manner of dress and all that (within company limits) that I believe expresses my management style. In my case, "relaxed but not sloppy, not formal but not casual, etc." So my favorite Strat is black as is my LP and my SG. To me, that conveys simplicity and all business. Combined with my not dressing flashy and not having much of a stage show, the message I try to put out is: listen to the music rather than focusing on me or the guitar.

But I have a red HSS for when I have one of those moods or the situation calls for me to be more dynamic. And I have a mint green Tele "just because" - I use it when I'm in a relaxed mode. (Happens that mint green is a relaxing color according to some studies.) Of course some of my guitars are whatever color "the one with the can't pass on the price and playability" happened to have been.

As for who's hung up, well only one of us use words like "ridiculous" and "hysterical". Seems it's a touchy topic for you if it can get you that worked up?
