I didn't at first with the Squier Precision, but then I had to a little bit after I changed the strings to flats, and I had to file the fret ends down. It has weather extremes around here that screw with the wood. Cold and very dry to hot and humid, and back again. I'm not in a climate controlled house, either.

Paul, you just touched on the question I was about to ask, Glenn. My 2012 Amn Dlx Strat had some minor shrinkage due to humidity about a year ago. After a few sore cuts and scratches my hands led me to find the end of the frets were less than desirable. I was taken aback that this model had such basic fretwork on the ends. An entry model might have been more understandable. For a little extra after purchase the frets are nicely finished off like I would have expected from the get go. Mind you, in Fender’s defence a tiny smidgin’ of a bit, it is the first axe I’ve had shrinkage albeit one had a rosewood fretboard, one a mahogany, and one a maple, and all were on the east or west coast. Still . . . a smooth fret end is better than not.

I’m not even talking about having the Strat plek’d which might have been appreciated (I say might because at the end of of this post there is the alternative spoken of in the last video).

My newer acoustic that is half the price is like butter. Granted it took some shrinkage before the Strat’s sharpness was very noticeable, but, had I owned the acoustic in the beginning, closer comparison would easily have revealed a difference.

How goes your collection of Fender basses guys?

Oh, and yes a bass can be plek’d:

The alternative Fender answer?

That said, if the setup is great you can thank the individual for the handy work or in the case of a machine you can thank the machine. :P
On the other hand . . . (pun intended).

Nothing to fret about though. There’s usually an easy fix.

Cheers!

I've heard about that plek'd thing, but I never looked into it, or knew what that was about. I'll check out these videos, then. Thanks for posting that. 8)

You’re welcome. Paul. A lot of manufacturers have jumped on board with this. It’s been around for a few years now, and some dealers and boutique stores will do it as a before or after service. Some stock guitars already have it. Plek has it’s followers and it can be a useful trouble shooting tool as well. It can also be handy in mass production. There is also the opposite take in that it is said to be only as good as the tech that is running it, and a good luthier can do just as well or, perhaps, better. The key is based on reputation for both which pretty much speaks for itself.

I wonder how much that it costs to have that done?

Manufacturers like G&L and Martin have the advantage of the cost of the tool being amortized over 5-10 years of production (how long does the thing last?)
A boutique builder or repair shop?
Call and ask ;) http://www.13thstreetguitars.com/plek-1/#plek

I did some checking around and, depending on your needs and locale, the average seems to be around $250 plus or minus. I have seen some at $150, but that may be less advanced without a full setup and string change or whatever or maybe it’s just the fair price. New fretwork has been seen to be about $85 an hour. It pays to shop around.

It may be interesting to see how the new style Narrow Tall frets on the Am. Pro. hold up to, as the Medium Jumbo frets.

Is that the only model that has those, or do you think they'll use them for everything?

As far as I know, it's just the Am. Pro. that have the Narrow Tall frets. My USA GL has the Medium Jumbo frets, as does the Mustang PJ. I really don't notice the difference between the two fret types.

On the USA GL Jazz, the neck feels so comfortable, I don't know that it really maters what configuration of frets are on the fret board.

The USA Geddy Lee Jazz has the pups that match up great with this Fender / Ampeg setup. Image

It all is color coordinated, too.

That reminds me, I never did get the red shag carpeting for the Fender amp, which I had talked about a few years ago. :P I just happened to remember that for some reason.
