No big deal, but I like the reverse tuners on the USA GL Jazz. Just cause they're different. Image

You know, I've never paid attention to that. Aren't those tuner pretty standard gear for Fenders?

Not that I'm aware of. I couldn't tell ya' any of the other Fender basses that have the reverse tuners, other than the USA GL Jazz.

I checked the specs on my Squier Precision Bass, and all it said was Standard Open-Gear, whatever the hell that means. The Squier Jazz Bass says the same thing.

It means, it's a standard open gear tuner, as compared to a covered, or closed tuner. The cog, or gear of the tuner is exposed, and it's a standard winding, counter clock wise tuning. Not reverse tuning, clock wise.

OK, so I take it these aren't the same kind, then?

They are the Standard Open-Gear as most Fender bass's tuners are. The USA GL Jazz is an open tuner, but reversed. It tunes the opposite direction your standard tuner does.

It really doesn't mean anything of any importance anyway. At one time there was a debate over which type of tuner held in tune better, the standard, or the reverse.

I have to admit, that's one area of bass guitars, or any guitar, for that matter, I'm pretty much ignorant in. It was something that I've never thought about that much, when it comes to instruments. Sure, bridges I have looked into and messed with, of course strings, maybe a little bit into pickups, although I've never bought any or had them installed on their own, but nothing really tuner related. I did buy a replacement set of tuners for this nylon string acoustic guitar that I had one time, which someone gave to me, and the tuners were screwed up on it, but that was a pretty easy fix, and it made the guitar playable again.

There really isn't that much to them, as long as you have the proper tuners that for that instrument. Pretty amazing how a good tuner will hold it's spot under the tension's, and pull from the strings.

That's true. It's strange that it's always been something I kind of ignored. I guess it's probably because I haven't had any tremendous issues with them, so that's why. I would say that's a good thing that I haven't.

That's good you never had tuner issues. It's no fun when a player has to continually retune a string, because the tuner won't take it's set, and hold the string in place. The happens more times as it's being played, from pulling on the string while playing it.

The only instrument I had tuning issue with, to where you had to constantly tune it, was those old nylon string acoustics I had many moons ago, when I first put new strings on them. Eventually, they'd settle down, though. I've might have read that is a common thing with those, but I'm not 100% certain. Oh yeah, my girlfriend's Daisy Rock guitar went out of tune a lot, until I put some Ernie Ball .10's on it. Maybe the stock strings were crappy, who knows?
