Whoo, boy! There we go with that Perry Mason again. Case closed!

I watched part of Perry Mason this morning.
Was it his arm, or his leg, or his ear, or his nose, or . . . aw, never mind. :P

It was before he went into a wheelchair, if that helps out any.
I think I saw that episode. 8) FSB

If I remember it correctly, he slipped on some spilled Jello, fell, and was paralyzed from it. Hence, the wheelchair.

Touchè.

Just found this. The Canadian Navy found another way to use a bass:

I guess that puts a whole new meaning to Navy Bass.
Sorry for the format but copyright dictated it.

I really do believe though my GAS for another Rickenbacker is fizzled out. I'm doing quite well my Fender Basses. And that also includes the Fender Bassman head, & cab. It's kinda' funny how the PJ Precision posed up the way it did. That really wasn't a planned out purchase. I can't kick about the price I acquired it for either. I did however say, if I saw another one in great shape, I'd try to get another one. I have it in a good case.

What amp were you playing through the last time you had a Ric, do you remember?

It was the Markbass Mini CMD 121P / NY 121 setup, that I used after selling off the Super Bassman / Bassman 410 Neo. The Rickenbacker was a 4003 Walnut.

OK, I remember that now. I though it was either that or a Gallien Kruger. I remember you had one of those around that time period, too.

The GK 500 Fusion, was a bit further back to an Ampeg SVT-410HLF cab.

Yeah, I remember that one. What ever happened with that, anyway? You didn't like the sounds you were getting out of it?

The sound just wasn't there. The Fender heads sounded better through it overall.

The Fenders do sound good. 8) I've played through the Gallien Krueger 800 RB head on numerous occasions, and liked it quite a bit, but I've never had any experience with their other stuff, especially Class D heads. I'd read some negative reviews on the Class D stuff when it first came out, but then again, a lot of that stuff was problematic when it first came on the market, but then again, that can happen until they iron out the bugs.

My first Bassman 500 head had a couple of kinks in it, that they ironed out. I'm doing fine with the current run Bassman 500 head.

Okay, guys. Here are “How long is a piece of string?” questions.

I’ve played through tube amps over the years, but never owned or maintained one.

Any idea what amp of yours went through tubes at a faster/slower rate or an estimate of the longevity?

How about when the tube(s) begin to deteriorate with a noticeable distaste for their sound? Any other reason to change or swap the tubes?

I know heat is the enemy, so I’m guessing some amps are worse off than others.

I will say this though. I’ve used a ton of electronics both good and bad, PCB and hard wired from all over the world. Not meaning to demean the effort, but, the biggest maintenance nightmares usually came from beautiful concepts ill designed with hand wired British gear. Not always, as the good was very good, but often. I can’t say why; but, I know of some early motor products that had electrical nightmares too. Germany has their own reputation, and other countries also have their less than stellar electronic performance at times. I would not be surprised to see similar performance and maintenance issues with older and, perhaps, newer amps. YMMV.

Your thoughts?

To be honest, I've only ever changed out a tube on a mic preamp that my girlfriend has in her studio. I'm assuming the tubes in the 1982 Fender Super Champ are original, since the amp was never used that much to begin with, never even gigged, which would probably explain it's pristine condition. In fact, it hasn't even been turned on in over a year, maybe two at this point, and was not used for a few years before that.

I also have preamp tubes in my Orange Terror Bass head, but that's another amp I haven't used much of since I got it, although that is going to change soon, when I start gigging and rehearsing for said gigs. I don't even know how to even mess with that amp, as far as that's concerned, so I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I'm assuming you have to take the amp apart, probably some panel unscrews, to do that. I've never examined it enough to figure that one out. I'm hoping it's something that I can figure out myself, and not have to get serviced (where ever I would go to do that.) At least I have the Fender Rumble 350 as a backup, just in case.

Interesting stuff, Paul. On a lesser related, but still similar example, I have two antique wooden radios with tubes that look to be originals, and they work. Unfortunately, AM radio is all but extinct here in the prairies so they now sit around collecting dust. They have had a lot of use through the years. I may find purpose for the large speaker in or from the console, and I’m going to check out what the tubes are in case they can be used as spares in a future amp. Just another bucket list project that may sit at the bottom of the pail.

Who knows, maybe you can rig them in some way to use as a guitar amp. Well, if they had some sort of mic or gramophone input you could. :P
