On short scale basses, the Mustang PJ is the top short scale bass. At one time, the Gibson SG Std.'s were the first choice for a short scale bass.

All in all, I'm becoming more of a Fender brand fan than I previously was. There are plenty of other fine basses, and amps on the market, but I seem to gravitate back to Fender.

I know what you mean. I've had a love/hate relationship with the brand, myself. The hate part doesn't necessarily have to do with the product, although I've had a few clunkers with them. I'd say they generally make a pretty decent product, though.

Overall though, I can't really complain about Fender basses, and their quality, as compared to Gibson's lack of quality. On a number of SG Std.'s, the frets were no where near being dressed within reason. I just got tired of them not being as decent as the basses they were in the late 60's.

That's not good, especially since they aren't exactly cheap. I think you're probably better off getting an Epiphone and saving a few quid with generally decent workmanship, from what I understand, if you want that Gibson style. Jack Casady often plays one of his models straight out of the box, when he has a new version out when he gigs. He doesn't have them specially made for him or anything like that. I've read a lot of positive reviews, too. Of course, you might always get a clunker and that's a risk with anything mass produced and how good the quality control is that day. I have had some really bad Fender products, one of them US made, so you can't always blame everything made off shore, either.

It can be a crap shoot with almost anything these days. Ya' never know. The last Epi EB3 I looked at didn't look too bad.

Yeah,.......... I had a Black EB3. It wasn't bad. A long scale version of the Gibson EB3L. Epi calls their's an EB3. The original EB3 Gibson was a short scale. An upgraded EB0.

Yeah, I've read about those. They had a long scale version with a slotted head stock, or was that the same model that had that?

Gibson went back and forth on variations of the old EB series basses. I seem to remember seeing them both ways.

Yeah, I think the one thing they keep is using the EB name. They have it applied to a new series, which doesn't look anything like those basses.

I never understood why they had to rename the original EB series to SG series.
