I think it's just the fact that a lot of people from older generations are too stuborn to even acknowledge the fact that there is still very good music being made that has quite a large fanbase.
I'll be quite honest, a lot of the quality that's come out in the 10's i think sh1t's all over old stuff.
There is still incredibly good music that's happening now, and it makes me cringe when people say music is dead.
Besides, who mentioned anything about household name stars?
Tame impala and courtney barnett are both really big here in Australia. I'd say the majority of young people have heard of them.
Trust me dude, these aren't just random streamings from random people I found.
Btw, i fixed that link. It was a simple mistake man

Give it 20 years or so and you too may be saying , "this 2030's music sucks, the god stuff comes from the 10's"
I'm an old guy and I like all kinds of stuff old and new, anything done well with soul and I'm down for it. I remember when I told my dad (a well respected and multi album recording artist) "Do you really like that old stuff ?" He said"I like anything done well with soul" So I played the gnarliest RUSH I had. His response was"The bass and the drummer shred, but the chick singing is killing me"
My point is that as you age your point of view changes. However, the guys I know here are ALL down for any music(old or new) that is quality. When we find something new we like we share it. I don't think any real musician discounts any music by date or location of manufacture.

Yes exactly. I never said anything to disagree with that, I believe.
What i don't get was he seemed to dismiss it based on how well known it was.
That's irrelevant. What's relevant is weather it was released in 2015 or not.
And all the albums which I posted came out last year.

Violent soho released the first single off their upcoming album last year, and they just released this like a week ago. I'm seeing them for the 5th time next weekend, super stoked!

No albums from 2015 in my collection, although I know some decent ones exist from Bowie, Gilmour, and such. 2015 just didn't get to me as in past years, and that's saying a lot considering that I'll listen to just about any genre. YMMV

That being said, I'm presently in the Adele switch off mode. Not that she doesn't have talent, but aside from the fact that some of her songs appear similar to each other as well as to emulating earlier styles IMHO, here is where an album or albums can do damage with over saturation hitting the market in malls, on radio and tv, and just about every where else. Streisand knew how to handle too much coverage, and Phil Collins hated being heard everywhere all the time. Album coverage in this manner helps to add profits and for the bands that get only a few kicks at the can this is the preferred method.

Another issue with albums is that artists sometimes regret the push to submit or complete material with deadlines or corporate direction. The risk is that when all things fall into place in a positive way great albums can come about. Unfortunately, the quick roll of the dice often comes out snake eyes. If one is lucky, fans accept less than good or less than great material, and maybe the artist(s) will be given a chance to roll the dice again. If the album doesn't sell well - you lose. If it does sell well - you win. Popularity and fan base can do wonders for a poorly executed album, but it may not get you a new following based on recording alone.

One way to load the dice is how Radiohead presented free music (pay what you want download), and another is how and why Prince bucked the system here.
This is not to say that the common record industry cannot produce great albums, only that the rules have changed and, conversely, good or bad, so has the music. Also if your favourite artist(s) comes out with a great album today don't expect it to happen again too soon. I believe that's how some years may look to be better with album releases than others. After all, it is a competition of a sort. One's preference and current music trends along with new technology will have an influence to be sure.

To summarize, are there good albums available today? Sure. Great ones? That depends on your taste, promotion, and John Q Public. In the past an album might just be grabbed based on tangible cover art along with the artist in mind. These days the total songs are reviewed and judgment is made with little regard to cover art. Often hearing one song leads to checking out the whole album.

Today's variety of distribution makes good albums sometimes harder to find, and this Forum helps to point us in a direction of our choice, thankfully.

Ya never know. You just might have that next great album in your collection. Better still, you might be making it. :D

Billy F Gibbons and the BFG's "Perfectamundo" album got some major spinnage in La Casa de Armadillo last year. ZZ-esque Squanky guitar + Afro-Cuban rhythms + hip-hop production sensibilities...that's tasty!

Fort Worth retro-cool soulster Leon Bridges' debut album "Coming Home" was a pretty big player as well. That young man's got "it." it sounds like a lost Sam Cooke/Otis Redding album from 1962...in a good way.

Lady Lamb's "After" seemed to be permanently attached to the turntable whenever the Armadillo Teen had control of it...especially the track "Billions of Eyes"...I've met Aly (Lady Lamb) a couple of times, thanks to a friendship with her dad (who is teaching the Armadillo Teen to play bass. Aly's an amazing and fearless musician who mixes tempos, time signatures, soft/loud dynamics and unique stream-of-consciousness lyrics in a very intriguing way. The fact that she does all the guitar tracks live and on her discs is another major draw...she plays a Jazzmaster (usually) and a Strat (backup).
...and Fender sent her a 68 Custom Silverface amp (I can't remember if it was a Princeton or a Deluxe Reverb) as an endorsement thingy!

...and I may be in the minority here, but I bought Adele's "25“ for Lady Armadillo, and ended up enjoying it more than I expected. "Hello" has oversaturated the airwaves, but the album has some truly amazing vocals, musicianship and production. Yes, it's mainstream, but it ain't bad.

For guitar oriented albums:

Pat Metheny - "The Unity Sessions"
John Scofield - "Past Present"

On the bass side, Christian McBride Trio - "Live at the Village Vanguard"

If you like Mellow and McCartney, John Pizzarelli put out "Midnight McCartney" -- worth a listen.

This is off violent soho's album they released a few weeks ago.
I think that album will be one of my favourites for this year certainly. It's also got number 1 on the Australian charts.

And I get to see them for the Waco tour, featuring DZ deathrays and Dune rats. Tbh i lost count of how many times i've seen them. I think this one will be the seventh?
