Apologies if this is already a topic!

What are your favourite albums of 2015?

In no order;

Thee Oh Sees-mutilator defeated at last
I was super psyched when I heard that thee oh sees had coughed up another album. I got it pretty much right away. Very solid album with a good contrast of punk driven garage songs to mellow alt rock sounding songs. I was even more psyched when I found out these guys would be touring Australia last year, so just the other week I went to all 3 of their shows in Melbourne. Do not regret it one bit

Tame Impala-currents
With Kevin releasing 4 songs before the album was released, i knew it'd be very different from his previous work. Let's just say this album has not left my car since it was released. I also saw these guys for a second time in november and it was probably one of the highlights of the year for me.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard-paper mache dream balloon
This album was the weirdest thing upon listening to it for the first time. Considering they've released a crap tonne of albums since 2010 and none of them have dissapointed i was really keen to hear this. But the direction they took this is genius. The whole album sounds like a soundtrack to a number 90's kids shows i used to watch, only on shrooms. Again, i saw these guys a few weeks ago and i definetley will see them again.

Courtney Barnett-sometimes i sit and think, and sometimes i just sit
Her vocal and lyric style is initially what got my ear with her prior releases. So i got this album and the first listen i loved it. Solid album that i personally think is getting the attention it deserves.

Fuzz-fuzz II
I first listened to this album in a friends shed while we were drinking and smoking. I had no idea they'd released another album but i was very keen to listen. I wasn't dissapointed at all, some killer stoner riffage on there. I can't even pick a song for this one, you're just gonna have to listen to it all.

I could go on for a while, but those ones probably stand out as the most memorable for me.

Sooooo what are your favourite albums of 2015?
Already 2016 looks like a good year, with Ty Segall's emotional mugger just being released like last week.

Ty who? I'm sorry, but I have never heard of him or any of the others on your list except for Courtney Barnett who appeared on NPR, but wasn't memorable to me. Possibly not to you either, given that your link goes to someone else?

I think the era of household name stars are over, now that most people stream. It's going to be hard to make lists that make sense to more than a small subset of the readers. But thanks for trying! :)

You've gotta be kidding, right?

I think it's just the fact that a lot of people from older generations are too stuborn to even acknowledge the fact that there is still very good music being made that has quite a large fanbase.
I'll be quite honest, a lot of the quality that's come out in the 10's i think sh1t's all over old stuff.
There is still incredibly good music that's happening now, and it makes me cringe when people say music is dead.
Besides, who mentioned anything about household name stars?
Tame impala and courtney barnett are both really big here in Australia. I'd say the majority of young people have heard of them.
Trust me dude, these aren't just random streamings from random people I found.
Btw, i fixed that link. It was a simple mistake man

They're Australian, so it's not surprising if they are better known in Australia. Quick, mention ten popular bands from Argentina or Poland. Both bigger countries than Australia. See what I mean?

I'm kind of missing your point here arth1 ... you don't want people discussing new music unless it's already known in every country?

But as much as I'd like to participate, I can only think of single tracks I liked from 2015, no full albums. There have been a few in the last decade, but none I can think of from last year.

Oh, absolutely discuss new music, and regional music.

Just don't be surprised if it's unfamiliar to the majority; even if it's a big thing among one's own age/location/culture tribe, it's unlikely to be recognized in the world. Everybody knows who Creed and AC/DC were, but don't expect the same recognition for Tame Impala, Motorpsycho or Turun Tauti. If not known, perhaps present the bands a bit.

As I have alluded to earlier, I think the "album" concept is going away. Most people stream these days - single songs, and not albums.

Uh, what do you think i'm doing?

Regardless of how big they are, it was released in 2015. It would seem that you don't want the discussion of new bands unless they're as big as the beatles, which entirely misses the point of music in the first place.
Not everyone buys whole albums, yes, but most of the time those people really don't find a passion in music. Every muso that i know buys CD's and records. We only discover some music by the internet, which is a great tool to find some gems.

Steve (stratmansteve) , posted some great albums on the "Psychedelic Revival?????????" thread. I would pick all of those + Tame Impala from Riley 8)

Thanks, SBLS. I'll try to add a few more.

Actually, I was a bit disappointed with 2015's offerings, although, I think maroonandgreysweater picked the ones I would have selected.

Thee Oh Sees - I liked all of their albums, maybe this one best of all.

Tame Impala - I think Innerspeaker was probably the best album I've heard in years, many years. Lonerism I liked a bit less (4 of 5 stars) and Currents has really drifted away from all the things I liked about the 1st two. It's still good, but I confess I don't own it . . . yet.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Great Psych music. You have to get past the band's crazy name. I nearly missed out on blues rockers, BB Chung King and the Buddaheads, because the name stopped me from giving them a serious listen.

Courtney Barnett - I've heard of her, but I haven't heard much from her yet except her single on the local Alt station.

Fuzz - Loved their first album and this is more of the same. The music gets heavy sometimes.

Ty Segall - I confess on the first play I didn't care for it. Maybe it will grow on me, but I like it less than his other work (and there's a lot of it) probably for the same reason I'm luke warm to Currents -- just not trippy enough. The great thing with Segall is if you don't like his current offering, he'll have another one for you shortly. For the longest time I didn't realize he was in White Fences, Fuzz and some others. He's quite prolific.

I bought quite a lot of new music in 2014. Not so much last year. I filled holes in my collection with music from the '60s, '90s and '00s in 2015.

I like both the new Tame Impala (whom I've been following since Innerspeaker) and the new Courtney Barnett. I have a soft spot for Barnett partially because, like me she plays lefty and seems to have an affinity for Teles!

Yes, both these acts are indeed Australian but they are pretty well-known to many Indie rock fans in the US and Canada.

I agree that there is plenty of great new music coming out nowadays. The problem is that terrestrial radio is no longer an effective means of introducing people to new artists. Here in the US, so-called Modern Rock stations have been playing mostly the same songs for the last 20+ years. Classic Rock stations haven't updated their playlists for over 30 years. Kids and young adults generally don't even bother listening to the radio anymore, and many older folks simply lack the time and/or the inclination to regularly, actively search for new music online. So many people remain unaware that there is anything at all new coming out other than the new Adele or One Direction albums.

I am one to say that there is often little of note in the hard rock/metal category. HOWEVER, two of the best hard rock/metal albums in a LONG time both came out in 2015. Check them out.

To be honest, I haven't really paid attention to anything that came out in 2015, except maybe David Bowie. I've been busy involved with my own music (recording, radio show, etc.) and haven't had much of a chance to check out stuff like I usually would. I have heard of some of the bands mentioned, at least.
