I just saw this on Allmusic.com.

Paul Kantner passed away today at age 74.

Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship

RIP, Paul. What a year and it's still January.

WOW !!

He passed today...

I have tix to see BLUE OYSTER CULT & JEFFERSON STARSHIP tomorrow nite at the Medina !

I wonder what's up with the show now..?? Their site doesn't mention a cancellation, though obviously Paul won't be appearing.

I first saw the Airplane in 1966 at an outdoor concert at the old Metropolitan Stadium (now the site of Mall of America). They were the warm-up band for the Strawberry Alarm Clock (Incense & Peppermints...) .

Grace Slick, obviously chemically influenced, said: " We're going to play a song that we're recording for our upcoming album... the Band just learned the song yesterday, and it's the 1st time we've sung it in Public, so forgive us if we mess up... "

The Band started up and Grace blared into the microphone: "One Pill makes you larger and one Pill makes you small..." It was the first time they'd performed White Rabbit.

I later saw them again at the Fillmore West a couple years later.

Paul's style always intrigued me and I'm not sure he got the credit he deserved.

R.I.P. Paul...

Thanks for the Music !

cheers!

hey lightning- you may want to check b4 going. I wasn't aware paul was still touring.

.....nonetheless, I was a big airplane fan from the time I first heard somebody to love. loved their music, loved their look, just loved everything about them. he will surely be missed. glad I got to see the airplane many years ago.

r.i.p. sir, and rock on from high above us.

That one really hits close to home, having seen Jeff Airplane at least a dozen times beginning with the Monterey Pop Festival in '67.

RIP, Paul. May you reside in a perpetual "summer of love" with John Cippolina, Jerry Garcia, Janis Joplin, and all of those who preceded you.

:(

I agree that Kantner deserved more credit. He and the Airplane certainly got my attention being that they were the only band that played all three events Woodstock, Monterey Pop, and Altamont. Plus Starship had "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" winning an Oscar. Had there been no Paul Kantner I might not have had a crush on Grace Slick.

Peace be with you PK.

You were at the Monterey Pop Festival in "67?!!!

Wow!, that was a piece of history. Hats off to you Sir!

I am very sad to see Paul go, I'm a little younger so he was always around for as long as I can remember. Jefferson Plane/Starship has always been a part of the music I listen to.

Prayers to Paul's Family.

This one hits me hard as I have worked with Paul on many occasions in the 80's, with different bands, solo, KBC, guests with The Band, guest with Jorma and Jack, I had diner in restaurants with him, the man can tell some great stories.
In my opinion he was a very humble man, with no rock star ego , I feel he treated people with dignity and never used his stardom to seem better than anyone else.
He will always be in my private club, as one of the LOUD ONES, as his stage volume was always louder than the venue could handle, and he would know if one of the road techs had found a way to govern his volume, and believe me it has been tried.
RIP Paul Kantner you will be missed

His quartet of JBL-equipped Fender Twin Reverbs *may* have been a contributory factor.

Well, just got off the phone w/ The Medina.

They've flown in a replacement and everything is set as scheduled, though it won't be the same...

In a way, a tribute to Paul who played so many shows.

I'm sure he'd be the first to say: "The Show must go on... !!"

cheers!

Wow, yet another blow to SF Bay Area rock icons. I still haven't gotten over the Ronnie Montrose loss. Now this?

RIP, Paul.

Also, another of the Airplane founding members, and singer on their first album, Signe Toly Anderson, died on the very same day as Paul Kantner.

She also did a few guest appearances with Starship later on.

I've always thought that Anderson's voice was much more melodic than Ms Slick's. Signe had the serendipitous "luck" of an unplanned pregnancy shortly after the band was signed to RCA and never received her due. Her career ultimately became a mere footnote in rock ephemera.
