Most signature models are just about marketing.

Keep in mind the first Fender Artist Signature model that came out was one for Yngwie Malmsteen. Yes, Yngwie got his signature Strat before Eric Clapton did. And at the time when the Yngwie Signature model was first released around the late 80s or early 90s, much of metal and hard rock guitars on the market were very neon-flourescent finish, reverse headstock, and Floyd Rose influenced. So how does Fender get the attention of people who may have been leaning more towards Jackson, Ibanez, Kramer, and BC Rich at the time? Put out a signature model by a rather well known guitar shredder. It worked on me. I was way into Yngwie, but liked other brand guitars. When the Yngwie model came out, although I didn't buy one, I read all about it, and thats probably one of the things that planted to Fender seed in me.

As far as the Billy Corgan (and J Mascis) signature models, I feel that Fender realizes that many people who liked those bands/performers are now in their 30s, and either have some expendable income now that they are older and/or want to revisit their youth by getting the guitar they saw their favorite artist when they were younger using. There is a huge market out there for newly made, retro-influenced skateboards, and while some kids are buying them, most of the purchasers tend to be people who want to revisit their youth, or now that they are adults, they actually have money to get that thing they always wanted when they were a kid. I think thats what Fender is trying to do with these models is market them towards Gen-X'ers who are now in their 30s who might have a bit more expendable income and a desire to get something they may have wanted when they were younger.

i dont know where you get your information from but according to "The Fender Stratocaster 40th anniversary edition" book E.C got the very first signature strat not Malmsteen wich was number two they were released the same year but the E.C came first.....
