No I don't think so, I mean the guy is still rocking on and I think he deserves this!

Although the pick-ups are kinda strange looking!

I thought it was kinda late. Then again, I don't exactly have my finger on the pulse of kids listening habits.

No need to feel stupid...it's kinda hard to keep up with all of the new models Fender comes out with.
The Elvis Costello Jazzmaster looks cool. I bet it sounds surf-a-licious!

Yeah most people don't really listen to Smashing Pumpkins anymore as far as I am aware. Don't get me wrong, I like quite a bit of their stuff, but I don't think Fender is going to roll in much dough with this sig.

After reading the interview I think if he gets what he wants the guitar will be more than just a tribute.

Most signature models are just about marketing.

Keep in mind the first Fender Artist Signature model that came out was one for Yngwie Malmsteen. Yes, Yngwie got his signature Strat before Eric Clapton did. And at the time when the Yngwie Signature model was first released around the late 80s or early 90s, much of metal and hard rock guitars on the market were very neon-flourescent finish, reverse headstock, and Floyd Rose influenced. So how does Fender get the attention of people who may have been leaning more towards Jackson, Ibanez, Kramer, and BC Rich at the time? Put out a signature model by a rather well known guitar shredder. It worked on me. I was way into Yngwie, but liked other brand guitars. When the Yngwie model came out, although I didn't buy one, I read all about it, and thats probably one of the things that planted to Fender seed in me.

As far as the Billy Corgan (and J Mascis) signature models, I feel that Fender realizes that many people who liked those bands/performers are now in their 30s, and either have some expendable income now that they are older and/or want to revisit their youth by getting the guitar they saw their favorite artist when they were younger using. There is a huge market out there for newly made, retro-influenced skateboards, and while some kids are buying them, most of the purchasers tend to be people who want to revisit their youth, or now that they are adults, they actually have money to get that thing they always wanted when they were a kid. I think thats what Fender is trying to do with these models is market them towards Gen-X'ers who are now in their 30s who might have a bit more expendable income and a desire to get something they may have wanted when they were younger.

I see your point, but Dinasour Jr has been around a long time and ha a cult following, i am more inclined to think he deserves one, in 1995 i would say give Billy one, Siamese Dream was one of the best albums to come out of the 90's but it is 2008 and after the flop of zwan or what ever, i dont see that many people are going to fun out there and get one. I would think there are other people that are more suitable for a sig model

I think he deserves it. The New Pumpkins album was pretty good, too.

I was thinking the same thing. Of all the gifted/influential players out there, they chose Corgan??? And I would have thought that he'd have a signature something that's not a Stratocaster. I though Iha was a better guitarist anyways and I'd buy a signature whatever he's playing now over this Corgan Strat.
