I'm looking for recommendations for seating choices when playing my guitar at home. Are you guys using 24" stools, 30" stools or chairs with backs?

Certainly, I'm using a chair with no arms.

FWIW, I find I play better standing up even if I cannot see the fretboard as well as I do when I'm sitting. I seem to play at an angle when I sit and it doesn't always sound so great.

I have this adjustable one...but usually just sit on an amp.

After many years of sitting precariously on amps, beds, and other things that are not necessarily made for sitting, I finally went to Office Depot and bought myself an adjustable office chair with no arms. I'll occasionally use a footstool with it for classical and/or jazz too.

The type or size of stool/chair is a means towards an end and the end is finding the most comfortable position that allows you to play the music with as little effort and strain as possible. Since we all come in various shapes and sizes what works for me may not work for you.

When playing electric guitar, I always wear a strap and it's adjusted such that the guitar is always in the same position regardless of whether I'm standing or sitting.

HTH

Cheers!

Hello db0967.
Sitting while playing, where ever you're comfortable is fine.
If you're rehearsing for a classical setting some practice time on a wooden chair so you will be used to it.
I have a bar-stool, 28", I rarely sit on because my guitar cords are stacked on top of it.
Standing is good practice if you stand in your act/routine.

+1 on setting your guitar strap the same length as you would have standing up.

+1 on playing standing up as an alternative when you are up to it; because, it does require a different skill that you may want or need some time. I find this is a good way to stretch the legs and to give the derrière a rest.

I use a Fender bar stool (comes in a variety of sizes such as 24 and 30 inch, and they are available with a variety of artwork including that of other brands). Aside from promotional reasons, staff and patrons at the local music stores are often using the same, and judging from many stools bearing wear and tear they get a lot of use. But, as mentioned earlier, any stool or armless chair that provides comfort should work. I find the stool is easier to move around a congested area though. YMMV. You may find too soft or hard can be a discomfort over time, and only you can decide. Make certain it has some quality as you don't need a fall with your instrument from shoddy material or workmanship. It happens.

I use the shorter bar stool because I sometimes use it for the drums (some thrones are less comfortable and more expensive). If a back is a concern, these are available too and have been available on the Fender versions. Occasionally I'll use a wooden chair (no padding), mostly when I don't choose to use or adjust the mic stand (but, I have that option).

When I want to chill, I'll stretch out on the couch (something I couldn't do with the 12 string LOL). I don't suggest a sofa or LR chair for practice or performance though.

I also have a very short hand made foot stool (I think it was a gift from a hobby store like Michael's) which I sometimes use, but books or something similar can also be an additional advantage depending on your needs.

The world is at your door. Good luck db0967 with your search and decision.

Everyone's preferences are going to differ.
Mine is that it must not swivel, and if it has a back, the back must be tall enough to support higher than the small of the back, or it'll do me more harm than good. YBMV.
For flamenco guitar, it also needs to be sturdy enough that I can cross my legs without spending thoughts or energy on balancing.

A precarious perch on a slick and rotating high stool with a small back would be the worst possible seating arrangement for me, but we're all different.

a 30" Bar stool w/strap will work for a while, but if I'm at it for a real long time, then the back starts to yell a bit.

24 inch padded stool with no back. I also use a strap when playing seated.

Just got a comfortable and durable cushioned wooden folding chair from COSTCO for a mere $29! It is a: Stackmore. It was less than half the price of most of the guitar stools or drum thrones found at most music stores. Below is a photo from the manufacturer's website. The Costco version is the same style however the seat cushion is not spotted.

I found a cheap 24" wood stool at Target but as with several others, I alternate standing. I also have a short folding chair on the patio with a cushion that works well enough. If I have a gig, though, I spend most of my time in the same mode as the gig will be, whether sitting or standing. I learned that one somewhat the hard way when I had a 3 set gig all standing after having spent years playing only while seated.

I usually sit on a metal framed cushioned chair with no arm rests that was made in the 50's. When I don't use the chair I use a padded piano bench.

I use a 30 inch stool and I more or less lean on it as opposed to sitting on it square. After three knee reconstructions it makes for a nice break ever now and then.

I have a related question:

If a person were planning to purchase 100 stools for a business, and wanted to try out various models before purchasing them, would the trial models be stool samples?

I'll get my hat...
