The (latest) search for the perfect (affordable) tele ended yesterday when I found a Classic Player Baja '60s in Faded Sonic Blue at my local shop. A thicker C shape neck (9.25 radius) and American Vintage pickups ('52 in the neck, '58 in the bridge) were key factors. Felt great in my hands....a nice fit. So I plugged it into a Fender Deluxe Reverb and put it through its paces. It has a four-way selector and S-1 switch and all the various positions sounded fantastic......from a classic twang to a full, deep chime.

It was selling for a better than typical price so I traded in my Classic Series '60s tele and went home happy.
Then I plugged it into my Fender Super Champ X2 and played. Sounded really good, and much better than the one I traded in, but................now I understand why the wise men on this forum consistently advise spending twice as much on your amp as you do your guitar.......and I know what my next purchase is going to be.

It's not so much the price as it being a good match. An amp can sound great with one guitar and ... not so good with another. Some combinations almost always sound great, like PAF-like humbuckers into EL-34 amps, or bright single-coils into 6L6s. But always try it out - it's good to have a couple of different amps. :)

But yeah, a guitar is only half the instrument.

One of life's most valuable lessons for a guitarist and believe me, it cannot be taught by others. It must be learned independently. I'm sure someone had lead you to water on more than one occasion but you had to drink for yourself. Congratulations.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Excellent post Pudbert. Cooking with GAS. Shopping for an amp is good therapy.

Ears to ya on your new axe and your observation on amp selection, Pudbert.
