I was really surprised to see at Guitar Center that our old friend, the MIM Standard now sells for $599 ... AND it no longer comes with a gig bag (it comes with no case at all).

Is this new for 2016? Or am I just not watching closely enough?

From what I've heard, they (Fender) have really, I mean REALLY, improved the MIM Strat and/or Tele recently. The early incarnations dating back to 1990/1991 were pretty bad from what I understand. They improved in the mid 90's though and made playable, but still inexpensive, Strat. Over the decades, they got better and better, and now the latest flavor of MIM Strat or Tele is one hell of a guitar!

I still chuckle over my '95 MIM Strat... A common, run of the mill, dime a dozen, sunburst finish/maple neck Strat. But yet hidden inside the pickguard (unknown at first, but discovered by a certified guitar tech) was the real, honest to God, USA made "Delta Tone" pups and wiring harness from the American Standard series!!! As explained by the guitar tech back then... It turns out somebody somewhere at Fender goofed when assembling my Strat in 1995. Someone in their inventory department either Corona, CA or Ensenada, Mexico sent the wrong parts!

Body, neck, bridge, all hardware, etc... - - - all stock MIM from Ensenada, Mexico.
Pups, pots, wiring harness, probably even the pickguard too - - - mistakenly came from Corona, CA!!

As told by my guitar tech: "Hey man, whatever you do, DON'T let go of this one!!"

Yeah, roger that. I bought a black '06 MIM Std new (so 10 years ago or so) for $399 ... I never owned a Strat and decided I wanted one (probably inspired by Ritchie Blackmore). For the low price, I was shocked over how good it was. At the time, I honestly thought I got some abnormally special guitar. However, over time and playing many other MIMs I came to believe that my guitar was more the rule than the exception. Back then I dropped a set of Tex Mex pups into it (they cost only $35 back then ), some new Graphtec saddles, and a trem-block from an '08 (in '08, Fender went to a larger trem block for MIMs). For cosmetics only, I went to white pearloid pickguard with black knobs. Wow, what a guitar. And I like the earlier headstock logo, too, which I believe also changed in '08 or so. Then ... years later ... MIM Stds went to $500 which made me feel real good about my purchase. Now they are $600 and without a gig bag ... a 50% increase over what I paid for my '06. That's not a criticism ... just an observation...

The used "red tag" cases are going for big bucks for some
reason lately :

This is a decent option :

I have noticed price increases all around, but sometimes they have rebates going on where they'll knock off $50 to $100 or so.

I reluctantly sold my AmStd Strat about 6 years ago, but my wife bought me a MIM Strat 2 years ago for Christmas. Honestly, the only discernable difference between it and my old AmStd is the stigma of knowing it's "Made in Mexico"... 8)

Have you always been xenophobic?

I had to look that up Arjay, thanks. Sicily has changed so many times xenophobia is probably instinctive.
Great analogy Art.
Stigma may not have been the best word choice swampyankee.although I get what you refer to, a misconception many people are affected by until they play an MIM, lol. It's all good, enjoy.

Thanx SBLS, you get what I mean. It was a facetious reference to gear snobs. For me, the proof is in the playing and value for money, not where it's made or whether it's a "true vintage reissue", or whatever.

My favorite--and most-often used--guitar is my 1995 hecho-en-Mexico Fender Telecaster...well-made, great feel and fit. Yes, I changed the neck pickup, but that was more for personal preferences than actual problems. I choose this guitar over my MIA Fender Stratocaster and my vintage G&L F100 (both of which I love),so that tells you something...

I have to say I use my MIM Tele more than I use my MIA Tele, perhaps precisely because I don't have to worry about it so much.

Is the MIA better? Sure, some things are indeed better. And the MIM required more setup and "customer QA" before it was good. But it also cost a fourth as much, and quite frankly, the MIA isn't four times better.

The MIM is a really good piece of equipment, and I don't have to worry as much about someone spilling beer on it, or banging it with a bass headstock, or crashing a mic stand into it, or ...
And after a pickup change, it doesn't sound any worse unless you have hi-fi ears. Fully recommended. And so are MIA ones.

I've brought my MIM Strat to my tech for a setup a couple of times and he commented they're nice guitars but they just seem to need a few adjustments over the first few years, he thinks because the neck woods might not be as seasoned or select as the MIA ones. After a couple years in, mine seems to be settling in nicely though
