Good read.
Confirms what I always felt but couldn't prove.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I agree with the article's premise. But the associated economics tell a different story. In the long run, drum machines are cheaper and faster to use. Because of that, the amount of drum machines we hear in recorded music (especially pop music) will only increase. The good news is that there will always be a place for live drummers for recorded music substance behind it.

Sure it can....if it shorts out
Though the video wouldn't be as entertaining...

+1

Being that I was a drummer in a previous life I am sorry to agree with this, but a drum machine will NEVER pull a Keith Moon and trash a hotel room or drive a car into a pool!

Great informative post, Zontar.

Just as drum machines have evolved so have the techniques of recording drums. Effects and layering are commonly used with miked drums and synthesizing is often an addition rather than a replacement and so on.

But, the real reason drum machines won't replace drums is they just ain't purty to watch.

FSB

Incidentally, I have played (good and bad) percussion on and off for half a century (I originally posted half a decade) and hated electronic drums and machines for some time. Especially cymbal reproductions. It's WAY better today (as are traps, drummers, and education), and even I use percussion software and electronic hardware. But, in the end it's all apples to oranges IMHO. Sort of the player/guitar argument - it's the player that determines the end result. Can you say Clapton/Peart?

Just my 2 cents. Now I'll beat it.
